Went down to the Novi MI Antique Arms Show this morning. Many 99s to be found, including a roll-engraved salesman sample with a Stith, a real nice 30-30 H, a 425 Stevens in .35,and maybe 20 others of more common varieties.

A few minutes after I got there I spotted a guy carrying a lovely T in .300. I dogged him to sell it for the better part of two hours before he finally parted with it. Nice clean rifle, but missing the rear sight (please, don't anyone remind me that I swapped a T sight to CMJohn last summer).

Got to go eat dinner, but I'll post some photos tonight.

Rod

No tang cracks or major problems, although there are holes from a set of sling swivels it once wore, and as I said before there's no rear sight. Blueing is strong and the wood is intact and nice. Plenty of color left on the lever. It has the red bead front sight. I couldn't be happier with this one.

Nyyyyce!

What are your plans for the gun Rod?

You going to find a semi buckhorn rear with the white line or Redfield/Lyman?

Suppose you could Stith it too.

So many options. grin

Rod,

Good for you. That rifle looks hardly used.

Looks like a real honey!!

Any signs of it having a tang sight on it?

At least its still got the red bead.

A low profile semi buckhorn would look close to the original until you can find one. Or, just Stith it and go.

Very nice rifle sir. I saw a 99T last year at a gunshow for
$435 if I remember correctly, drilled and tapped, no rear sight,
it didnt get much attention at all.

Nice one. Congratulations. You going to hunt it or relegate to safe life?

Norm: The seller was asking $900 for the 425. It was nice, but not THAT nice.

LBK: Like you, I believe that old guns should get some fresh air in the fall. My plan is to shoot this one and hunt with it.

By the way, the roller engraved Salesman Special (or did we call them Spegal Specials?) 99 that was at the show yesterday was marked at $2200 with a nice Stith and Weaver K2.5. I got the seller down to $1500 and he might have gone lower, but that was when I got distracted by the T walking by.

I was faced with EXACTLY the same dilema a couple years ago. There was this pristene salesman sample ANT an equally as nice "T" in 30-30. BOTH at the same price. I couldn't decide. TWO little voices over my shoulders. One on each side saying," buy 'em BOTH". So I DID. I think you should have done the same thing, even if it hurt a little. smile smile That salesman sample you passed on was right in the price ballpark with the Stith. wink wink
