I am considering a 280 AI, and am thinking to use Nosler brass. The nosler has the 40 degree shoulder- will the standard 280 AI dies from Redding work with this brass?

Will the gunsmith have to chamber specifically for this brass?

What COL are people using in a long action remington ( long magazine= possible long COL) with 140 Accubond and 140 ttsx.

Any info is appreciated.

thanks

If you have your smith chamber it for the sammi spec you will be fine. I use Nosler brass in mine and it works great. Really like the fact that its ready to load when you get it.

Nosler commercialized a less popular version of 280 Imp. I am not sure about the dies, but read that you couldn't safely shoot the Nosler ammo in the more popular and prevalent versions of 280 AI. Both have 40 degree shoulders, the Nosler SAAMI, and the older wildcat.

I remember reading that people were questioning Nosler's judgement on their choice when it debuted.

Neck size and you'll be fine. What has folks worked up is setting the shoulder back when using dies made for the Nosler version of the Ackley and the full length resizing die.

I have shot a fair amount of the Nosler ammo with no issues.

I built my .280IMP in either 99 or 2000 and set it up to crush fit a .280 Rem. When Nosler brass came out I bought some, measured a datum line using a .420 bushing on fired brass from my gun and Nosler virgin brass, and found them to be within .002 of one another. I have had zero issues.

same findings here. I've chambered about 10 280AI's. The two we have here were chambered the way 7mmfreak describes above. Virign Nosler brass is the same as 280 brass fired in our chambers.

I don't shoot the Accubond but the 140gr NBT seated .020" off the lands is 3.381" (or there about given tip variation) in my gun.

Any Redding dies made after 2011 are to the new saami spec, IE Nosler. The are stamped .280 Acley Imp. Those made before 2011 are stamped. 280 Rem improved 40* and are the older wildcat spec.

As before Nosler got in the game all AI chambers were what the gunsmith finished it at. By asking this question of there being a problem with SAAMI vs Wildcat, that shows the difference in them. That being said, it shows the wildcat chambers had a slight variance , thus came the term, fire formed. I have a few rifles that are Improved, and have made a personal habit of shooting the brass in the fire formed chamber in that gun only. As with most Ackely cartridges, the brass grows very slowly, neck sizing is all I ever need to do most of the time. That being said, the parent cartridge, must fire in the improved chamber to be considered proper.

I have the drawings for the sammi spec chamber and case. The Nosler brass is to the new saami spec. The shoulder is set back .014" on the sammi spec. When I fire form cases they come out right to spec. I've checked them on the optical comparator at work. I use Redding dies, ( sammi spec). The chamber on my gun is saami spec.

I just checked the Cooper I just got back from having it rebarreled to 280 ai by Cooper. They use saami. New untouched Nosler chambers just fine with just slight resistance on bolt close. I'm still going to form my own from rem 280. Have heard of softness issues with Nosler and I'm not paying their prices unless it is really worth it for quality, which I certainly have not heard reported

I have a Cooper in .280 AI. I've fireformed from Rem.280 and used Nosler brass. The Nosler brass is is very good , IMHO. Ihave'nt had any problems at all with it.

Wow, .014 is a lot in a chamber! They must be trying to make it proprietary or something.

I did not know that... I have read that Redding has two different part numbers for SAAMI and wildcat chambers. Thanks for the info!
