I picked up a Rem model 7 and ordered a set of Talley lightweights. When I mounted them I noticed that the front base and ring had an "L" shape and was wondering if there was a benefit to mounting the "L" towards the muzzle or towards the chamber? I've noticed them mounted both ways on other guns. Thanks guys. I'd appreciate any and all opinions.

The scope determines that choice. With a short tube, the "L" to the rear, long tube, to the front.
I go with what looks and fits the best.

Thanks DF. I kinda thought it may have something to do with eye relief. I was worried tho, that it may compromise stability if mounted the "wrong way".

As you said, it has more to do with how you want the scope positioned or eye relief. I like my scopes back toward the butt, so always mount the front ring/base with ring toward the rear. Since I also like to mount scopes as low as possible, I usually have to bevel the leading edge of the base on Leupold bases/rings. Havent had to do that with Talley lows or Ex lows.

Thanks for the input Taz. I'm still waiting on the scope so I'll just have to see how it sits when it gets here. I just had the bases/rings and had to play with it while I wait for the scope. LOL
