I know this is not the Hunting Optics Forum. But I'd like a little input for the big kicker crowd. I've been in search of the optimum Rifle Scope for my 375H&H. Right now I have a Leup 1-4 mounted in QR Talleys. I've had problems determining legal bucks with it and that was very frustrating. My spotter was my wife with 8x binos trying to figure out if the buck was legal or not. The muley was moving at 120 yards or so. As I started putting pressure on the sear I decided I'd better hold off because I was not certain and my spotter was not helping much. Asked for the binos as the buck was moving over the hill I could then confirm it was indeed a nice three point. Opportunity lost. I don't look at the 375H&H as a Big Bore but more like a 30-06 with a 270 grain bullet. Trajectories are very similar so why limit my self to a 1-4X. Why not go with a 3-9X, 3.5-10x or 4-12X? Then I read about fixed 6 powers and the simplicity with real clear optics makes me wonder? The 1-4x will stay in the current Talleys as a back up. What do you guys think is the optimum scope? Variable or Fixed, with or without Long Range Reticle? Thanks for your input.

On my .375 Wby, I really like my 1.25-8x 32mm Bushnell 6500, which has handled hundreds of punishing rounds without any problems: I also really like my 2.5-16x 50mm Bushnell 6500, which also has flawlessly handled hundreds of punishing rounds: Bushnell also makes the latter in a smaller, 2.5-16x 42mm, version: http://bushnell.com/hunting/rifle-scopes/elite-6500I just ordered one of those for my 7mm Wby Ultra Lightweight. I'm sure there are many other great scopes that would work, but IMO these are good options. The 50mm one probably won't fit well if you have iron sights, unless you mount it higher than I would like.

Yeah MarineHawk I have a 1.5-6x36 Bushnell 4200 and I'm not liking the eye relief. Besides the scope is pretty dark when I look through it. But the 6500's are 30mm tubes right? That might make a difference. Eye relief?
Gunner I had a leupy 2.5-8 on her at one time then my wife saw it and wanted it put on her 275 Rigby. So you know where it went! LOL It's still in the running..but I'm leaning towards the VXR3-9X40 The 40mm objective would allow more light in to my aging eye!

10-4 Wild Bill, a 4-12x40 Redfield Revolution with a duplex reticle would work, they are bright, boot heel tough, nice and slim, priced right, and are backed with a lifetime warranty from Leupold.

The 1.25-8x 32mm has more--5.9 inches--of eye relief, but it might not have as much magnification or light gathering as you want.

"4-12x40 Redfield Revolution with a duplex reticle." Really Gunner? I've not looked at them. My past experience with Redfield was back in 1978 in USMC. They did not do very well when you changed power settings. Actually we were instructed to set them on 8 and leave them there. "5.9 inches--of eye relief." WOW that's a good bit of eye relief, MarineHawk! But you are right on the exit pupil side. I'd have to leave it on 1.25 so I could see anything at dawn or dusk with my corrected blind eyes.

Within short to moderate to medium ranges, your 1x4 Leupy scope is ideal when hunting the much larger game. For deer, I`d go with a 3x9 or less magnification on your 375. However imo and to single out a specific scope, the 2.5-8x36 VX3 can be permanently fixed atop your 375 giving you great balance for anything you could hunt with your 375 including deer, all dangerous game and do so at any distances if using a 375. You won`t be over-scoping the 375 cartridge with a 2.5x8. I use a 1.5-5x20 VX3 aboard a 375 Ruger Alaskan. With what I already have, it wouldn`t be my 1st choice as a deer rifle. Put a 2.5-8x36 VX3 on your 375 and leave it there.

You don't happen to have a pic you can post of that .375 Alaskan, do you?

I have had both a 1.5x6 Leupold and a 2.5x8 Leupold on .375's either will work and are sufficentely bright for most purposes.

If not plausible, then I suggest you visualize what a 375 Ruger Alaskan with the black Hogue stock and matte black barrel looks like, and then visualize what a 1.5-5x20 VX3 looks like (w/black Ruger scope rings), and then put them both together. I`m sure you`ll figure it out ok as I have no doubt that you already know what they both look like. Happy visualizing!

Funny I don't see any one saying go with a good fixed power??? I don't know about you guys but if I have a Variable on the rifle I normally set it at one power and usually don't move it off that setting. Like on my 1-4x I set it to 4 and leave it. Is variable that good or is it just old school to be thinking fixed power scope?

I'd easily be satisfied with a fixed power on a .375. I have a .358 Norma with a 6X42 and my .416 RM wears a M8 3X, can't think of a reason to change them.........

My preference would be a variable which enables wider FOVs (if necessary) after lowering the magnification. With a fixed scope you are bound to whatever FOV the scope happens to offer regardless of the hunting terrain or range distance from your game. Variable or fixed, is a matter of personal preference. Cannot go wrong with either. Some including myself just like having a variable adjustment.

My .375 Ruger wears a Leupold VX3 2.5-8. IMO, it's the perfect scope for this rifle- it's relatively light, has lots of eye relief, and can take advantage of the Ruger's long-range capability with 270 gr. and lighter bullets.

1-4, 1.5-5, 2.5-8, 3.5-10, 2.5x, 6x, all are fine choices for a 375. It's not like the 375 is a short range round, so no reason to handicap yourself if you need more magnification.

I hear ya Bighorn. Like I said I had one on her at one time. Just not supercharged about the New VX3's the rubber ring they are putting on them now just looks cheap.:( Maybe I'd be in the market for a used one. JJ Hack turned me on to the 2.5-8 a long time ago.
