Thank you Rick for providing a great place to hang and talk guns and hunting and related issues. I appreciate it greatly. It just came to me as I was looking at the website. I used to surf another site A LOT. It wasn't a pay site, per-say (no folks, it wasn't a porno site), but you had to pay to register your handle. Otherwise, somebody could steal it and troll with it and people would think it was you. This site is free and there are no issues like the above. This site is much more navigable and secure. Much more updated. The other site was like 1995 and the owner stubbornly wouldn't update it. I think I actually had a couple of computers destroyed by viruses sent by malicious persons on the site. No problems like that here. It also isn't troll central.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank you.

There was yet another site I used to frequent more often than I do now. Ten million moderators and if you said something one of them didn't like, they'd start effing with you and maybe ban you. I never got banned, but I just got tired of a thread getting good and then getting the zap from some seventy year old geek sitting in his mom's basement who sucked up to the owner and became a mod. Your moderation is top-notch Rick.

I have often opined, that one of the best things, besides of course the great people here, is Rick's lack of moderation. Even the most contentious threads run out of steam, and the ignore function works pretty good.

I expect I could count on both hands the number of posters that have been banned in the years I've been here. Even when Rick zaps a thread, he usually just moves it to the Dead Zone rather than delete it or lock it. Rick's a wise dude.

Used to spend time at another National site that had a Northeast forum. It would be dominated with Pa. hunting issues and it would get heated. New outfit took over and moderated and banned everyone till no one posts or reads it any more. One thread on this site can generate more hits in an hour than the whole Northeast will do in a month over there.

With an ignore feature, this place self moderates.

Unfortunately, since you're all on ignore I can't see what you guys were posting.

Zero-six hundred on an icy Vancouver morning, the rain pounding down and bills coming in each day's mail.....but, that comment has made me chuckle and brightened my whole morning! Good one!

I agree on the over-all quality of the "Fire" and Rick's able and unobtrusive moderation of the site.

I have seen all too many guns/hunting sites where the personal biases of the "mods" have resulted in decisions that reflect their seeming desires for attention and are not equitable. I also notice that some sites are VERY oriented to making $$$$ and the quality of "moderation" suffers as a result.

The quality of a given site is, IMO, a reflection of the personality(s) of those who operate it and the integrity and simple honesty demonstrated here is not as common as one would hope to see. So, I think that the "Fire" kicks azz and is THE BEST guns/hunting site I have seen.

I hope to be here for another 40 years or so and I hope all of you fine people will also be here.

Tell that to my gun fund.

The evolution of the 'fire has been interesting to behold. The one constant has been Rick's nearly hands off moderation approach, except in the rare case where he felt he just had to intervene.
