I'm looking to scope my FA model 83 in .454. Are the more expensive mounts available (e.g. Lovell and TSOB) a good value when compared to a $20 Leupold mount? In all likelihood I'll be shooting this gun primarily with lighter bullets and reduced loads. I don't mind spending the additional money if it's warranted. Have any of you experienced mount /ring failures with the lesser mounting setups?

I'd say overkill is best. Spend the extra money.

A set of Leupold mounts came with a used .454 6" I bought...never did try them on the gun. Sold the gun but kept the mounts as I bought an excact .41 Magnum to replace it.
I would shoot light .454 or heavy .45 Colt loads with those mounts BUT if you have any thoughts of running full power 300 gain+ loads go for the stouter mount...

I would go with the best for your .454. You never know---you might grow to like the heavy loads! <=>
