Please advise the make and model # of the Aperture sight that was mounted on the cocking piece or bolt shroud of the Model 20/26 sporting rifle. Thanks

I think your referring to the Lyman 1A or 2A "cocking piece" sight. Theres one on Ebay right now so better get on it fast.

It's the Lyman 54.

The peep sight that was made to fit the Savage 1920 and 20/26 bolt shroud, called a "tail block" by Savage, is the Lyman #54. I guess that you could modify the cocking piece on the 1920 or 20/26 to use the Lyman 1A peep sights that were made to be fitted to Mausers and Springfield 1903s. Many, maybe most, 1920s had the tail block factory d&t for the Lyman #54. The 20/26s came with Lyman #54s mounted at the factory in Utica, NY.

That sight on EBay has a dovetail. Is it actually a cocking piece sight, or a receiver or barrel sight?

Ahhh, I see it now, I was looking in the Lyman section, not savage.

I've got a buddy selling a 1920 with one of the 54's on it but as you can see by my avatar I'm in the process of switching servers so I can't post the pics till I get back online.

I picked one up last year. In the box with instructions. I was thinking of putting it on my 1920 until I saw it involves quite a bit of smithing. (drilling) So I guess it will stay in the box for now. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Thanks much for the prompt responses. I just aquired my first 20/26. The "tail block" is already drilled and tapped on its vertical surfaces. I looked five years to get a Model 20/26 and it was worth it.

What is the serial number? Any interesting features?

The Serial # is 48xx. It has a scope mounted (Weaver side style). the bolt handle has been forged and bent to accomodate the scope. Actualy looks normal. Scope (Weaver 4 X) sits directly over bore. Has a Marbles folding open rear sight. No sling swivels. Sights can be used with scope mounted. Stock is in fair condition considering its age.

Servers good to go again.

The hole that shows on the tail block is there for mounting a Lyman #54. It looks as though someone brazed a lump of metal on the back of the cocking piece, cut a dovetail, and mounted a Lyman 1A. How does it shoot?

Do you know what the screw behind the ejector is for?

Another late receiver without stripper clip slots. I'll wager the small screw at the rear is a home made bolt retainer. Increasing the mass of the firing pin like that, I would imagine that lock time is increased proportionally. (B.E., sorry for the thread highjack.)

Not sure Jeff, it's up for sale right now at $400 but I passed on it with the extra checkering.

I did notice the extra holes in the side as well, not supposed to be there, doesn't have anything to do with some trigger work would it?

Here's what I thought they were supposed to look like, my serial number isn't far off that one.

Is it a 250 or a 300? If I didn't already have too many irons in the fire and if it was in the US, I'd probably be a buyer at $400. (Even a quicker buyer at $400 Canadian)

That is the highest SN that I've seen, so that would be enough for me to throw $400 at it. The highest SN that I currently have is 125xx and the lowest is 10xx.

It's a 250, he actually has 2 250's at $400 right now.

The one pictured has extra checkering and I believe the barrels been bobbed, the other is a customised sucker that I really like. It was a model 1920 receiver with a custom stock and barrel in 250. Was offered a trade on my pre-mil 99F 308 for it but I backed out cause I really gotta get some cash going in my gun account again after buying the 1899C 38-55 and 23B.

Ya but look at it from my point of view, I've got an original 1899C in 38-55 coming instead of a customised 1920.
