Im not a fan of the 7 mags. That said, in standards, I would choose my 280 over the 270 any day. I just cant justify the 270 when I can get everything and they some with the 280.
7 Mags??? Why??? They kick as much as a 300 and if you are going to shoot a mag. go for a 300 and above. That is where the real power starts. 200 grain bullets and above.
As far as the short mags go; if you want to load heavy for caliber bullets, (200gr in.300, 175r in,. 284 ..) you will not even come close to the " [color:"red"] [/color] " standard long action round due to the fact that the bullet starts impeding on the powder capacity if loaded in the short round.. I'm 33, I've reloaded most of these rounds since I was 12.
helps to have a dad who was a gunsmith.

I disagree with everything in your post that I quoted... Bart

Well...Where do I start? Let me first say that I am a reloader. I have never shot a big game animal with a factory load(thanks to my Pop). The 7mmMag,with a 140TSX,is faster than a 280Rem by almost 300feet per second. Not to mention that that combo is the finger of God on deer. The 280Rem has what over the 270Win? With a 140gr bullet the 270Win will push it faster than a 280Rem. And lastly...The 130gr bullet and the 270Win go together like death and taxes. I think tha t the 270Win and the 280Rem are both fine rounds, but the 7 Mag tops them both by a large margin...But The 280AI is the shizznitt . Man, I want to make my 280 an AI but it shoots too good now to even think about messing with. I just purchased my second 300 win. (REM 300 WM Hence the handle) I love my original tang safety on my first Ruger 300 . Its a heavy SOB but it shoots. I never thought I would buy the same cal. but, I have and I am seriously thinking about ordering a Montana rifleman barreled action in 280 AI. Any thoughts???? Bart, I do respect your opinion!!

Have your Gunsmith set your 280's barrel back and "Improve" it... If your gonna buy a MRC action do it in something cool like a fast twist Swift so you can shoot heavy bullets that "reach out and touch someone" ... Welcome to the Fire. Bart

I have shot deer with 21 different guns, many calibers over the years, plus moose, bears & timber wolves the only animal I lost was with a 44-40win its a little dated and could go. But I will throw a litttle flame towards Bart on his 7mm mag Bart I have a 7mmwsm I will put up againts your 7mm and won't be humbled it tacs better than any of the 7mm I have owned, and at 3300fps with 140gr it kills. these short stubby cartridges are a dream to get to shoot unbelievably well. and I think all the short stubbys are great and is one ofthe best choice for whats out there today. 6ppc,6.5/284, 284, most the wsm ,look what 6ppc did to the deuce, the 284 case at 1000yards all you fellows who don't think to much of the wsm better be carefull placing any bets at a shoot you could loose a lot money. Look at the target thats 3 shots my brother fired testing powders, for a load he called it a ace Under.100 he's a old benchrest shooter and a good one. this gun is a hunting 24" barrel at 6.7lbs in 7mmwsm Just a crazzy old Canucks 2cents worth
Bart, Im a humble man. If I cant sneak up on the object of my desire, I guess I have no business being in its territory. I love the stalk. That being said, those 2-400 yd rifles I talked about before are just fine for me but, I dont need them. I was just wondering about the quality of there work since I was too pre-occupied with other things when I was a younger man to pick up on my dads trade.

If you think about it, a 30-06 is all you need for killing all game on the northern part of the globe. And probably 95% of all the game in the world. New powder and bullets has taken this caliber up to the next level. The performance is not to far from what the 7 mm mag and 300 w mag gave when they where intorduced in the 1960`s.
Both my 7mags were pussycats in the recoil department when compared to my 300 mag. I liken them more to the 30-06 than to a 300 mag. Just my shoulder talking though.
+1...My Steyr SBS 7mmRM shooting a 160 @3100fps is no comparison to my Rem. M700 Classic 300WM shooting a 180 pill @3150fps. The 300WM is brutal! Try a 200 grainer at 2950fps off the bench and it will rattle your teeth! The 7mm is just fine!
