Okay I am looking to get a 243 for coyotes. Dont need a expensive rig, really needs to be able to handle some abuse it will ride in the truck a lot so when I want to call, I can jump out grab the rifle and get to it. I am asking you guys to see what your experience has been with different brands? For instance anybody ran one of the Thompson Center Dimension bolt platforms, I like the idea of being able to switch calibers especially to like a 22-250. But for now I am more focused on the 243 running a bolt platform. Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I like my model 16 Savage in .243. It shoots really well and appears to be plenty rugged.

Bought a Ruger American Rifle in 243 for just the same purpose last summer. Been more than satisfied. Actually pleasantly surprised.

Ruger tied with Remington for best selling rifles this year...first time anyone has come close in 50 years.

Fair enough with such a strong opinion on the ruger that is probably the direction I will go here in the near future. However I still am curious about that Thompson dimension platform, curiosity killed the cat....

Savage Axis might be a good choice. I'm not a Savage fan in any regards, but my brothers .223 is MOA out of the box with the package scope and rings. Can't aruge with results.

laid a savage model 16, vanguard series 2, and winchester m70 all out on the counter at the local gunshop. took home the winchester even though i am a savage and vanguard fan. it's just a heck of a nice rifle for the price.

My first group, using some left over Power Points, was less than 1".

2nd group, using a randomly chosen load of 90gr Speer Deep Shocks and 4320 was also less than 1". Load development over. Truck/loaner/bad weather gun ready for duty!

Trigger has a blade, ala Savage. But it breaks clean.

Stevens. We keep one handy at the ranch at all times. Talley's and a Leupold and you are good to go for a long time.

Good suggestions, here.

I'll add that I've never had a bad M700 243, and they are twisted pretty well from the factory.

Academy has good sales on the SPS's, and Dicks will have decent deals on stainless ADL's from time to time.

Leaves options down the road, but I'll say the SPS matte finish will likely not fare well as a truck gun without some coating.

I'd buy a used SS 700, M77, or Howa. Then cut the barrel to 21-22", tune the trigger, bed/float. Top it with a decent used 3-9x40 and have at it.

Now with even more aplomb

My .243 is just about what you describe.

A Howa youth model, 20", Timney trigger, McMillan Sako classic pattern, Leupold VX2 2-7X33 W/Talley LWs. Accurate and a deer-killin' sumbeesh.
