No extra holes???

What do they consider the sling studs as?

I don't know how the lever can have alot of case color left cause I brightened the pic up and the reciever sure has some grey, but thats to be expected with a gun made in 1908.

I'd like to see if it even gets one bid with the studs and checkering at $750.

Les, take into account that the front sight and the tang sight would sell for an easy $300 on Fleabay off the 32-40.

Wasn;t me, I wouldn't mind having those rifles anyway. Who here would actually complain if they had those in his safe. Les

Should be able to get the 32-40 reasonably since the barrel had been drilled for scope blocks. Les

I'm wondering if those were really for a scope or not.

Did they make scope mounts for octagon barrels back then, and why would it be set on the barrel and not the receiver?

I seem to remember seeing some long scopes mounted on some Marlin's with Octagon barrels, they were all actually mounted to the barrel, supposedly for accuracy. Les

That globe front sight must have pretty popular back in the day. My 99B made in 1920 has one, and I have seen a lot of other 99's for sale that has it.

It is actually a nice sight set-up. Really lts you drill down on your target, you could change the apertures. Les

this guy has posted several "desireable" rifles.none of which have been correct.I'd stay so far away that a telescope wouldn't let me see those rifles.

I agree with MD. "No extra holes". BS. I also would stay away even though I really want either of those calibers, unless the price was much lower. Condition isn't great on either. JMO FWIW. My top $ would be 4 bills for either. REGARDLESS.

Les, no inserts on that one, it's a Lyman flip down beech sight, usually run around 2 bills maybe more if it's windage adjustable.

The 32-40 is clean, to bad about the two extra holes but I could look past those. I brightened it up.

Joe, I wonder how much this forum influences bidding on 99's on the auction sites. Your post of the pictures of the
32-40 plus your guarded/cautious endorsement ("to bad about the holes but I could look past those") came not so long before the bidding started!!! I am betting that those bidders are members/lurkers of this forum.

I agree with you that the rifle does have some appeal - I know from my many years of pursuit of 99's that 32-40's are few and far between.

I think this forum has alot of influence on Savage related items. ALOT OF INFLUENCE!!!!

I don't mind posting an item when the bidding is over but when we post them as they're running it sure buggers up a good grab for one of the members here, thats why I don't like the Ebay tidbits thread.

I think 2 years ago we had a very large thread going on Ebay names so we wouldn't outdo each other unless it was something we really wanted. Just last week for example I saw Rick bidding something and p.m.'d him as to how much he wanted it, he did so I backed off but a sniper bit him in the azz in the last seconds anyway, I also laid off on a Boone scope for Lightfoot (that he never did bid on??? ) but as far as bidding goes and the members here I honestly think it's not us outdoing each other I think it's the lurkers just checking in and buying stuff that we agree on. If we kept our mouths shut around here more often we'd start picking up tang sights and other good stuff at their regular prices from years past.

I just went and looked at the auctions, no surprise huh?

The one we all agreed had issues doesn't have one bid yet the one we said we could live with is already at 7 bids.

When I first came to this forum it used to be about data collecting, dating the odd rifle for a new guy or talking about irregularities like my MD mark on the barrels of 1895's.

Nowadays it seems like it's turning into an Ebay chat forum.

Yea, I think you said it all. I used to enjoy the forum a lot more when it was about learning all we could about the Model 99'. Lots of extremely valuable information has come thru this forum.......however lately the quality of threads is less (IMO) and more like (as you said) an auction chat room. For this reason I find myself pulling back.
