New muzzleloader here. I have a lot of cast 44 and 45 bullets. Just bought a 50 cal ML. I see the sabots for loading with jacketed bullets. Will they work OK with cast? I'm thinking the killing power should be the same. Just wondering about the sizing as my cast are usually .001-.002 over the diameter of the jacketed bullets.

Properly sized the sabot does not know if it is a jacketed or hard cast. I run the Beartooth 280gr LBT .452 and they hammer pigs.

Goo dquestions. Shouldnt be a problem at all. The trick seems to be getting the right sabot for the right fit in your bore.

I shot a bunch of soft cast .429 240's out of sabots when I ran out of XTP's. Did fine on small deer, which is all I shot them at.

last month just bought a bunch of various .40, .357, and .429 cast bullets ranging from 158gn through 300 grain. I plan on getting a variety of sabots and playing around with them this spring.

I've been shooting them in my inline and flintlock, have'nt had a real lot of time and with scope on the inline I was shooting a cloverleaf with 240 grn 429 cast in a sabot, and at 100 yards with just one day playing I was shooting about 2 inch groups with same bullet and sabot with open sites,I can't argue with that.

Thanks. I was thinking that it should work and be much cheaper than those doggone powerbelts.

Knight Rifles has offered lead cast bullets w/sabots since their beginnings and even sent a pack of them in the box of a new rifle. I don't know if they still send them with the new rifles today but the new owners of the company do still offer them for sale on the site.

MMP and Harvester offer sabots in a variety of sizings. A visit to their website might be worth a few minutes. As they are not terribly expensive, it is not prohibitive to trial various sizes or brands.
It seems that the tighter the fit, the better the group.
However, my hunting loading is not the absolutely most accurate combination I have found. While good enough for whitetails to 160 yards, it is relatively easier to load.
Use whatever bullet shoots well for you. Those lead bullets have worked, and worked well, for a long time.

This past year I bought a Savage 10MLII and had to try some MMP black sabots and RCBS .452 270SAA cast bullets. 282gr as cast and lubed, wheel weights.
They shoot great, very accurate and I have a bunch cast.
I can't use them for the hunting season in CO. but it was fun to see them stack on top of each other.

Too many choices and too short a season!

I have been wondering this same thing, but with using the various bullets I have for my Old Army, which range from .454-.460". It seems some would be too big for the pistol bullet sabots or too small for the rifle bullet sabots....
