Came across this deal a while back, and it was priced fairly but was too rich for my blood.
Dropped back by and looked again, and shop said rifles were hard to come by and they'd rather trade for something than sell it outright.
I happened to have a heavy barreled 700 in 25-06AI in the truck that I really liked, but didn't hunt much because it was really best suited to long range stand hunting. It was one I had bought used off the 'Fire at what I thought was a good price at the time. Set up like a Sendero with a long, heavy Douglas barrel in a Ti stock. A good shooter, but heavy for what I usually do and a little more barrel heavy than I like, but the cat's meow long range and stand hunters over big oat and wheat fields.
Long story made short, they looked at it and offered me almost double what I had in it - and I walked out with this new Model 70 and the 6x36 Leupy LRD that was on it, the scope off my rifle, and almost all the money in my pocket that I had when I walked in.
I kind of regret letting my rifle go (I always do), and I may have gotten taken (wouldn't be the first time) - but I think I made a good trade and I'm excited and tickled with the new toy.
It's a Stainless New Haven Model 70 full custom built by Hill Country rifle in 25-06. Brown Precision stock with a Hart barrel.
Called Matt at HCR and he remembered it. Guy with a flock of customs built it for his wife, and she hardly ever shot it.
Kind of a neat speckled granite paint job, 2.5lb trigger, and handles and balances really nice.
I had been fire forming for the Ackley and had exactly 3 rounds of Factory Fed Prem 117 25-06 ammo with me when I got her home, and the wind was blowing pretty hard, but I looked down the bore and checked the scope, and she looked right on, so I just sat down and let 3 fly in pretty rapid succession.
I think she might shoot...
I may tweak it a little - or cut an inch or two of barrel off (it's around 24" right now), and I may swap scopes around and stick the little 6 on something else or trip it, or I may just leave it alone for a while.
I really like the stock - my first Brown Precision - and am liking this little rig real well. Everything else I've got is pretty light, and this is no heavyweight, but it's different enough from my herd of 700's and Montanas to be fun and interesting.
I shot it again this evening with less wind and shot a 5 shot group to the same spot as the first that would fit under the same quarter. It really likes these Federal 117 Gamekings, and it's going to be an excellent shooter. Up 3 clicks and over 1 and shot again and punched a hole dead center and an inch and a half high - and that's pretty much that.
Think I'll try to find a hog or coyote and blood it...
