Can anyone tell me about AUS-8 stainless steel as it pertains to knife blades? Good?...Bad?...or what. I just bought a knife made from it, but know nothing of that steel.

Thanks,
Mike

AUS-8, a frequently used Japanese steel, which is known for taking a very fine edge, due to the inclusion of vanadium. Sharpens easily, and has moderate edge holding and corrosion resistance. -Wikipedia-

I suspect some of my kitchen knives may be made from this or a similar stainless. I've only built one knife with AUS-8 and it worked fine. I like several other steels better but they are all more expensive.

I have had a couple of Cold steel knives in it.
Has moderate edge holding and corrosion resistance. -Wikipedia-
They nailed it. Will take a decent edge, will hold it moderatley, easily resharpened. Corrosion resistant but can and will rust.
I have one of Cold steel big folders with a clip point blade, that I take hunting, very handy, cause its light, and when I sit at the base of a tree if I see any saplings in my shooting lane I can slip down and lay them on the ground quiet and quick without having to pull my fixed blade I use for deer dressing.

j2 & boise nailed it pretty well. not as good as vg10 but better than factory 440c. custom makers can tweak 440c to perform better.--cranky72

Thanks, fellas. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't some crappy, cheap steel.

I have owned several knifes made from AUS 8. The best performing ones are the Ontario RAT 1 folders. Those are simply amazing.

About 5 to 10 years ago got a Spyderco Calypso made of AUS 8 stainless
steel. I have found AUS 8 to be a very good steel. It re-sharpens up easily,
takes a razor edge and holds an edge decently. Must be the added vanadium. cool
