Is it possible to adjust the trigger on a stevens my .308 is at 5 pounds and was wondering if there is a way of doing it without the gunsmith....

If you run a search, you will probably find it. They adjust the same as the "old" Savage triggers. I printed out the directions from another site and have them at home. Adjust the screw with the "wire" that locks into the X cut on the head of that screw. Just be careful not to go too low and be sure to check the safety function several times.

Best solution, by far, is to buy the excellent and easily installed rifle basix trigger assembly for about $55.00 and put it in.

I adjusted the trigger on my 200 .223 and I think I have posted how to do it on this board. It is not hard to do and it was worthwhile. However, please note that the stock trigger won't let you go below 3.5-4 lbs. before premature/unexpected firing.

handles well, I like the stock and after a little sanding and painting it will look very nice. and best and very unexpected,,,the trigger breaks very clean and consistant at an average of 3.1 pounds after 10 pulls
