Elk I bagged this past fall had taken an antler into it's nasal area. Punched through the suborbital gland (just below the eye).

Ya gotta wonder what the impact strength of a Rams skull actually is. I was trying to locate the ram that dinged this one thinking I could find a blood smear.. never did see any others with blood on the horns...

Saw a cross section of the skull. Very sponge like and very cool. They rut hard in November here in Colorado. Have seen them banging heads in July though, must be a guy thing.

Pic of a hole in the skull of a bull elk I took near West Yellowstone MT. in 1988. My guess is it is from a rival bull's antler. It's not a bullet hole, at least not mine, as one shot behind the shoulder dropped him at very first light on opening day.
