A question will a .300 winchester magnum fire in a .300 weatherby magnum???

it's a debate some fellows at work were talking about as I have neither i simply thought I'd ask...

It would fire, but not safely or accurately. If some darwinist wants to trash his chamber at the least and his brain cavity at the most it's up to him. I would never do that to my rifles chambers even if I thought it could be safe.

Actually both are belted magnums and headspace on the belt.

Like stubblejumper already pointed out, they are both belted cases, and I'm sure the 300 Win would fire in a 300 Weatherby, but you're not gonna get me to try it out!

I witnessed a fellow fire a .270 Win in a 7mmRM. I would never have believed that the 270 would fire, but it did, and I saw it! A friend of mine fired a 338 Win Mag in an 8mm Rem Mag rifle. Nothing happened to the rifle, and the bullet went through! The rifle was a custom barreled Sako.

Didn't we discuss this on the "ask the gunwriter" forum not too long ago?

Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

actually,

I stand corrected! You are correct I wasn't thinking! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

I still don't think it'd be a good idea though!

It is a very bad idea!

But, the 300 Win will go boom in any of the magnum length belted magnum chambers based on the basic 300 H&H case.

This includes going boom in a 7mm STW which would be an almost hand grenade like experience.

There are other bad combos out there, like the 350 Remington Mag in any number of chambers including 7 Rem mags and 300 Win, etc. etc. etc.

This is why Hornady put the broad belt on the 450 Marlin.

Be safe out there.
