We broke ground this month building our dream home. Here's a few shots of our progress.

Cut all the wood off the lot last year and will use it for the post and beams.

It looks like a beautiful spot.. Will it be high enough (ground) to ensure you will have no issues with water and/or runoff?

Has that wood been "treated".

And what type of wood is that?

No, it is poplar, oak and cherry. I'm drying all of the boards in a greenhouse

Living room trusses are Douglas Fir from Oregon.

Yea, there should be no water issues. Its on the top of the hill and we have sloped all ground away from the house.

If you know someone with a log truck with a Prentice loader probabbly 2-3 loads, I bet they even know where there is a hole to throw them in.

Have you been schooled on powder post beetles?

I would treat all of that wood with disodium octaborate tetrahydrate.

either Timbore or Boracare will work

it will save you much pain and suffering down the road from not using kiln dried certified lumber.

be sure to also treat the soil and foundation for subterranean termites. Unless you're rolling the operation with cash, your financial institution will want a WDO report from a licensed applicator.

And if you're bank rolling the whole thing out of pocket, I'd still pre-treat ASAP.

not sure when the precisely is the best time to apply the octoborate. I am also not sure your greenhouse will suffuciently dry that hardwood below 8% humidity. Those beetles operate between 10 and 30% moisture content of the wood.

good luck

I've always said - build on the highest spot you can... smile smile

Who's building it? Or are you doing it yourself? Time to complete?

Size?

Nice to see what grass looks like again... (sigh).. smile smile

Looks like a slice of heaven.

Build a big deck and shoot deer and turkeys off of it.

Congrats!

Yea its been a long winter. The build is too complex for me. I hired a very reputable builder that has built this type of home before.

The big timber will be used as post/beams on the outside of the home and will not be in contact with the ground, they will be stained and waterproofed. Will that chemical allow the use of stain and waterproofing?

congrats on accomplishing your dream home!

some great advice available here, and while it may seem confusing and a pain to check it all out am thinking the headaches you can endure now may save you major headache down the road.

check out this link:

I have read that you can, but I've mostly applied to cedar and natural outdoor stuff like planters, posts, and arbors

it does/will leave a white residue because it's a wettable powder application mixed with water, but it does not leave a film.

but here is a lot of info on this product, and if you don't see the answer specifically you can always call their number.

Congratulations on your beautiful new home. May you have many happy years in it.
How many board feet of lumber did you get? Also the stumps have some of the most beautiful wood. Just hard to cut. Ask me how I know.

Well, you can have all of the stumps, I will even load them for you! We got about 15,000 BF out of the initial cutting. I have 10 more trees up there that we knocked down with the excavator last week. I hate to say but it will be firewood. We are putting in heated basement floors with a boiler system. I am going to also have an external woodburner that will be able to heat the water. I have a whole bunch of firewood leftover.

You will enjoy the exterior hydronic wood heat.

Have you researched a particular brand yet?
