Is this A Ka-bar or some kinda Knock off. a friends father gave it to me so I don't have anything into it but I've never seen one that the only marking were not at the base of the blade. The blade is 4" and knife is 7 3/4" , blade is high gloss chrome

Yep, it's a Kabar. Pre-1950. 1940s would be my GUESS.
The whole carbon/chrome thing kinda came and went somewhat fast, IIRC.
Once the thin plating on these knives chipped or wore through, the steel underneath quickly turned black or pitted or both. Once this was figured out, they fell out of favor very quickly.
This carbon/chrome thing was used a lot more on kitchen knives and fish knives than hunting knives. Was probably more appropriate for said knives also, IMO....

funny you should post this tonight.I just finished looking at thier site and they still show a chrome on thier website, but they are marked at the base like all the other KA-BAR. I need to get a sheath for it and I'm hopping the net ones will fit this knife. http://www.kabar.com/knives/detail/36

I just got a new sheath for an older Kabar knife similar to yours. They didn't give me any hassle at all, just mailed it.
The measurements are right on the site, you should have no problem getting a fit for it.....
