Wife and I packed up our upper-end Nikon 35mms and bought two Coolpix Nikons largely because of brand loyalty. Easy to carry and use and reasonably good photos. Mostly we take pix of our granddaughter (at eighteen months she is smart enough to demand that we show her the pix immediately after taking them). Very satisfied so far.

The Nikon Coolpix are cheap, easy, and reliable. But not what I'd call durable. But a pelican or similar case will remedy that. I go through point and shoot cameras often enough due to loss or damage that I can't see paying more than about $75. In that range, you can't beat the Coolpix.
But for truly great pics, you can't beat a real 35mm. So I carry the Coolpix around pretty much all the time, and the 35mm when I know I'll want pics.

I have been VERY happy with a couple of Fuji's. I'm happy with my Fuji JX310, has more features than I can use but the price was <$90.00 and it fits in my shirt pocket: wide 28mm lens w/5X zoom, 14 megapixels, etc. This last pic is a self-portrait, I hung the camera from a small sapling using a GorillaPod flexible mini-tripod: The Fuji JX310 also takes HD video's, panorama pics, has a 2.7" LCD screen, etc.

When my older Fuji went face (and lens) first into a rock on a hiking trip, I shopped around. I considered a lot of options and wound up with another Fuji, this time the T410 .. the Walmart version of the T400.
i like the 10x optical zoom. So far no issues with it.
The only thing I'm not as happy with is it takes a little longer from pushing the button to the picture being taken so with fast action, y' kinda sorta have to anticipate the shot coming and push the button a fraction of a second ahead of time.

Canon G12. Now they have the G15 out, the 12 is a steal.

Is there any small camera that works particularly well for closeups, like taking pics for posting items for sale?

I'd vote for the Panasonic Lumix with MegaOIS.

Paul They all should have a macro setting. My cheapie Olympus has 2. The depth of field is almost non exixtant on the super setting so a flinch can get it out of focus but you can get some great close in stuff.

Paul If the items for sale are the size of a wedding ring you might find a pocket camera lacking. But for items the size of a handgun virtually any camera will do.
