I've enjoyed reading this forum for quite sometime. Never had to post as my questions usually get answered by reading old posts & threads.
If you guys could help me out I'd really appreciated it. I've narrowed my all around deer rifle to a No. 1 25-06. I want a 26" barrel so I can use it for varmints & target as well. My question is which configuration to go with? Is the 1-V a poor choice for deer 85 - 150 yards? Is the 1-B's quarter rib inherently susceptible to the "twisting" I've read about if there isn't a sufficient cooling time in between each shot?
I would really welcome any other comparisons between the two I haven't thought of.
Thanks

Also, in the past has Ruger ever leak what offerings they will be reintroducing? As I'm sure you all already know, on their web-site they say: "Ruger No.1 Rifles are available in select calibers and configurations for 2013, these caliber offerings
will be discontinued in 2014, when we will introduce new calibers for these configurations."
Do you guys prefer the late models or early versions?
Wilson or Douglas eras?
Black butts or red butts?
Not sure which of those overlap the 26" 25-06s.
Thanks again,

All of the #1V's I have (13) are 24" barrels. I have over40 #1's. The v's are my best shooters. Bar none. The .25-06 for deer is a fine choise Use 100 gr to 120's good. Luck!

Welcome to the Campfire!
The 1B is the only Ruger No.1 in .25-06 with a 26" barrel. If that is what you want, I would not worry too much about the rib issue you describe, If you are not aware of it, the AB and AH that Lipsey's had ran as an Exclusive back in 2006 is worth your investigation. They had 24" A weight barrels and are a delight to carry for hunting and to shoot. PM me if you want to know more about these models.

How far are you planning on carrying the rifle to shoot a deer? personally, I would go with the 1V. But some folks don't want to carry it very far. It depends on how you hunt I spose... I like the 1V and the 1S.

When I was a teen I carried a No. 1 1-B 30-06 12 hrs a day for three days. I remember being impressed with how many ways I found to hold it. I'm not going to let weight be a factor. Pretty girls & cars are always more work, why should it be any different with a rifle?

I had a 1V .25-06 for a year or so. Remarkable rifle. It put my handloaded 100 gr Sierras (using H4831) into the .3's at 100 yards. The most accurate factory rifle I've ever owned.

Yeah, should have kept that one! Ah well...

It did feel a little muzzle heavy and cumbersome for general purpose deer hunting.

My other Number One rifles have been the 1B, 1S, or the Tropical model. All were good rifles. A single 1B in 7mm Rem mag, gave me some accuracy and reliability problems, but it really wasn't bad and I suspect a little more tuning would have brought it into line. Instead, it got sold off.

That 1V .25-06 though... It was quite a rifle. The 24" barrel was no handicap for velocity either. No problem reaching 3350 fps with the 100's.

Best of luck! Guy

I've never seen a 1B that I'd call inaccurate, and that's after owning several and shooting others. So I'd probably say go for a 1B in the .25-06 smile

No.1V would be my choice! I think there are a couple on GB 25-06 in 1V. I'm not supposed to look but I do!

A #1B in 25/06 is going to be heavier than that #1B in 30/06. Same barrel contour + smaller hole in the middle = more steel to carry. I've never claimed to be the toughest guy in the world, but I'm definitely no whimp either. I had the #1B in a 25/06 and .338 Win. Mag. (both crazy accurate) and I didn't like to carry them in the hand at all. The weight didn't bug me, but the dimensions of the forend wood sure did - just too bulky for how I carry a rifle in the hand. If I was going to do that forend again, I most likely would go all the way and get the #1V. It a heavy barrel, but at 24" it actually balances decently (I had one in .223). Plus, it most likely would give you those warm and fuzzy feeling as you drive tacks all day long. Plus, try craddling a #1V into the crown of a cowboy hat and aim at something way out there. A small earthquake won't budge that rifle off target.

They stopped production on the 1B you'll have to find it used in 26 inch 1B

For you guys who've been following Ruger's releasing and discontinuing of configurations and calibers what do you think they will introduce/reintroduce in 2014?

Well, I think it would be pretty difficult to make a guess with any degree of certainty. Would not be surprised to see the 1B back in the lineup. If you analyze the 2013 lineup, you will note that 3 of the caliber/configurations; the 7x57 RSI,the .375 H&H 1H and the .45/70 1S are generally considered to be/have been the most popular chambering in these configurations since they have been made. The .375 H&H dates from the beginning(1967), but few were made until 1970. The 1S in .45/70 dates to 1970. The 7x57 RSI was an original offering in about 1982.
The 6.5-284 has never been commercially sold by Ruger in any model, although an offering of a M77 MkII in 6.5-284 was sold on the Ruger Auction a few years ago.
The .222 Rem. was fairly common in the non prefix era of 1967-1969 and is one of the most sought after/desirable calibers to be found. A lot of folks are going to get their itch scratched with this little 1A in .222. Look at the prices commanded by the scarce/rare/desirable 1A's in the .22 Hornet and .223.
So for 2014. I think it likely there will be some new, never before done offerings and some in old and very popular caliber/configurations. What?? I would not even try to guess.
Just be patient and see!.

For the record, there is a K1B in 25-06 -- SS, laminate stock -- for sale on Guns International now -- not mine!. It would be a bit heavier than the wood and blue 1B but I found that model 1B laminates rarely needed any 'tweaking' beyond trigger work and it would qlnce in the hands better than a 1V.

As for for Ruger's future #1 offerings.... I find nothing in their recent past catalogues that encourages me to think that they will pick something I actually want or, when/if they do, that they will actually produce it in any numbers -- if at all.

That rifle was a stainless/laminate that I put factory walnut on, that's all.

My AH is easy to carry and I don't mind it having a 24" barrel.

This one is growing on me. 24" .25-06 light sightless barrel, 6X Leupold mounted in low rings and stocked in a plain but nicely colored piece of Circassian walnut. It is a superb No 1.
