Started out with a 30-06 for my first elk rifle when I was a teen.
Thought I needed a mag. to get the job done. Carried the 300 win for many years and a 30-338 for a couple.Tried 4 different 300 wsms but never warmed up to any of them.
Read about the 300 Weatherby and had to have one of them. Then the 300 Ultra appeared and needed one of them. Shot a few elk with the Ultra and decided it didnt kill any quicker or deader (had a huge appetite for powder) so I went back to the 300 win for a while.
Recently bought a 300 saum here in the classifieds and it has quickly became my favorite 300 mag.No it doent get the same velocity as the 300 win, but its close with about 10 grains less powder and less recoil. Its one of the only mags I've had that I dont need a brake on to shoot comfortably

I have had three or maybe more as well several .338s. I finally got tired of packing the weight and returned to the .30-06. Hornaday or Federal high velocity 180s with a good bullet are just too easy to get to work good enough. I'm pretty sure I can handload at that velocity (2900/180) with a small remaining stash of H- 205, but my rifle throws factory's at 1 1/4" or a hair less. I'm happy, the game is dead. Jack

The only 300 mag I have ever owned is my first custom rifle: 300 Win mag, 165 gr Nosler BTs 3200fps. I like it and still shoot it, but not as often as any of my 7mm mags!

I have had 300 Win Mag, 300 SAUM,300 Weatherby Mag, and 300 RUM.
I liked all of them except the Weatherby>.
Currently I am sitting on a 300 ultra and a 300 win mag.I waffle back and forth as to which one is my favorite.

All my 300s have been/are Win Mag.

At least 4, maybe 5. Ruger tang 77, BBR, Rem 700 BDL, Win 70..

seems one more I can't remember.

IMO the WBY doesn't offer 'enough' more to justify the expense, rifle & brass. If you need more than a Win Mag, you need MORE.

It would only cost me to try any of SMs and I'd gain nothing.

I used to own a 300 Winchester Magnum, but sold it years ago to help fund an elk hunting trip. (used a 338 Win Mag for that hunt)

I used to own a 300 H&H just because I got it for such a deal. Sold it to a pre-64 Winchester collector.

I own a 300 Wby Mag in a Remington 700 Classic. It was a gift and will never be sold.

I own two 300 WSM rifles, both purchased because I liked the rifle, not because I really wanted the caliber. The first was a Remington 700 XCR Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation limited edition. The second is a Remington 700 CDL Boone and Crockett limited edition. Seems I am a sucker for Remington limited edition rifles.

I have owned three .300 Win Mags and a half dozen or more .300 WSM's, all performed great but I no longer own any of the WSM's, I still have two .300 Win Mags........The only reason I went with the .300 Win's is I decided I liked a long action rifle better than a short action as I am 6'2" a long action rifle just fit's me better......................Hb

I have 2, a Ruger Tang safety with a synthetic stock which is a 300 Win. Mag. I also have a 03A3 in 308 Norma Mag. Both kick the dog water out of me, but are from my Father. Been working up a load with 190 gr. Hornady's have to kill something with them some day.

I have owned probably over a dozen .300's. .300 Winny, .308 Norma, .300 H&H, .300 RUM, .300 WSM, .300 Weatherby.

The .300 Roy and and the .300 Winny are by far my favorites.

IIRC,I have had 4-5 300 Weatherby's and all on M70 actions;4 300HH's ,all pre 64's,4-5 300 WSM's....I have lost count of the 300 Win Mags, factory and custom that I have had;among them were a pre 64 M70,which was very nice...and a Tom Burgess/Maurice Ottmar 1909 Agentine mauser which ranks among the finest rifles I ever owned.Out of all of them it is the only one I wish I had back.

I have had one 300 RUM and owned it for 24 hours and one box of cartridges, and could not sell it fast enough, which I did.I shoot one belonging to a friend once in awhile to remind myself why I never want another... smile

Gradually the 300 magnums have taken a back seat to various 7mm magnums;I am not anti-300 magnum at all and think the 300's have been wicked killers for me,but the 7mm magnums kill things just as dead, weigh less and have better manners.

I would have to bump into a pretty exceptional rifle before I could be tempted by another 300 magnum.

Just the .300 Win Mag, probably a half dozen in different varieties over the last 20 years. I currently have just two - a Rem 700 KS and a Sako AV Deluxe.
