The Rio de Janeiro State Health Department said in a statement that the woman's husband was cleaning his spear gun when it went off, firing a harpoon that hit her cervical spine.

I like the way it says "...within a centimeter (less than half an inch) of killing her."
I've seen too many like this: "...within a centimeter (0.3937 inches) of killing her."
I'm not a mechanical engineer, but still there's enough difference between "within a centimeter" and "0.3937 inches" to set my teeth on edge. Good to see it not happen here.
