Anyone have pictures of what they did with the factory setup to increase the length? Is a new follower need if I move the factory spacer back some?

Here's one way to do it. Was fairly easy and still using it. 223 Mag Box Mod

Also, I am still running the factory follower as-is, using a BDL setup.

Thanks a bunch that is what i was looking for. Mine is bdl also. So you are having no issues with the extra space between your block and the follower??

No issues. There's really not that much extra wiggle room for the follower to flop around. The "Mike Bryant" mag box / follower surgery is common with the 6mmBR boys and involves cutting down .308-based magazine components and a spacer to function with the short BR rounds in a mag-fed 700, but with the 223-based stuff I've never heard of anybody running anything other than the factory 223 followers after replacing their factory mag box spacers with a slightly shorter version.

On mine I removed the mag box spacer, shortened it up a bit and tacked it back in with a wire feed welder... worked pretty good. Still using the .223 follower, but use a spring from the .308 family of cartridges which has been trimmed just enough to fit the mag box. Essentially, the spring protrudes from the back of the follower slightly and uses up that extra space you created. That's how Greg Tannel set up my first 223AI, so I basically copied his idea when putting together this one. Hopefully that makes sense... I could snap a picture for you if need be.

I use the 223 magazine box, remove the rear spacer, a milled 308 follower narrowed up in the middle to slide in the 223 box, and run the rounds as long as I want, full length, no worries. I should patent it......

Aalf do you have pictures of your setup with the milled 308 follower?

Aalf do you have pictures of your setup with the milled 308 follower? I don't....it looks like any other follower from the top side. If you take a 308 follower and set it on top of the 223 box, you'll see where it has to be filed down to fit.

Ackleyfan,
That's the route I was going to take until aalf explained I can just put a big one in the box.

put a big one in the box.
Travis Not sure how to respond......but I'll try These are not my pics, but I have been talking to Robert Gradous as he does this mod...mine feeds 75's great with a standard 223 follower but I've been thinking I might try it just to tinker around, I sure like the 75's in my 223!

I've read Robert knows a thing or two about rifles.
But I follow aalf. Aalf says put a big one in the box? By God, I put a big one in the box.

Thanks for the pics. That was my original plan as well. Putting a big one in the box might be easier.

I started using the 308 size for my 22-204, as that case is .090" longer than a 223, which put me at max length with a .250" spacer installed, and no room left to chase the lands.
The full length still works fine with the 223 case.
