Have to deal with coons getting in the garbage at night.

"Real" guns are forbidden but air rifles are allowed.

Neighbor has tried a 177 and 22 calibre with bad results.

On some of these TV airgun shows, they show more powerfull air rifles but no side by side tests.

Hope you folks can point out some options.

Specifically which .22cal have you tried, and at what range?

A strong .22 should be enough, but shot placement is important, and "center of mass" doesn't cut it.

It is an older RWS break open model. A pellet fired through the chest will penetrate and they die. All too often, they die out on the street a block away, the kids going to school find them and it creates a big PETA type "hunt for the murderer".

The gun needs to be able to break down a 15 pound coon on the spot.

Most .22 break barrels on the market now will have more than enough power to stop a coon. SHOT PLACEMENT IS VERY IMPORTANT. A body shot will only piss off a coon, so head shots are the only way to bring one down. Also, the range at which the shot is taken is also very important. Remember, this is an air gun, not a firearm. Shooting a good sized coon should be taken as close as possible, not 30 yards away, and sometimes require a follow up shot.
I don't hunt, but I've been shooting Airguns for 10 years now to know how much power a good air rifle can produce. Just buy what you can afford, test different pellets to see which one shoots the best through it (for accuracy, not all pellets shoots the same through all guns) and get close for the kill shot, and be prepared for a follow up shot. Also, don't get hung up on how many fps the gun shoots, it's a marketing ploy by the manufacturers, most if not all current air rifles can stop a coon with a properly placed head shot.

I dont understand why u have to kill it. A live trap would be cheaper than a any air pistol. If the coon is looking for food the trap will catch em. Maybey im missing the big picture here.

To get the topic back where it belongs, I just got an R7 and Hawke 2-7x32. The weather has been rotten, so I've managed to stretch 25ft range in the basement. Not close to ideal, but a lot better than nothing. It's a sweet little rifle, and I'm very impressed (so far) by the quality of the scope.

You can't go wrong with Hawke scopes. I've been satisfied with them for the past 7 years now.

It belongs in the [bleep] along with Larry, he began the topic and the only responses it deserves are scorn and contempt.
