Hi to all, my question is: "Has anyone had any experience with the 180GR. Woodleigh bullets in the 270 for elk hunting?"

no experience with any 180 out of a 270, but a 150gr partition has worked for me. i'm confident your 180's would work as well.

I don't have any experience with them, sorry.. My curiosity is "why" would you consider them when there are lots of great 150-160 and even 130-140 grain bullets with proven back grounds.

I have a box of the Speer 170 gr rn .270 bullets and just haven't seen a need to load them...

My last years bull, a 5x5 Roosevelts took two 150 Core Lokts that were pass throughs. They worked perfectly.

Unless you already have some Woodleighs handy or a cheap sourse, I doubt they're worth the effort.... My humble $.02

A 130gr partition, and H4831 is like peas and carrots.

Cookie does 130's and I've seen her knock two different elk right off their feet. Something that I've never accomplished with my 30-378.

We do a lot of open country hunting and like to retain a fair amount of speed. That being we tend toward midweight for caliber slugs.

I the rare dark timber instances, then slow and extremely heavy.

I agree the 150gr Partition is all you need for elk.

Killed 20+ elk with 130 grn Nosler Ballistic tips! (Collective Gasp!)

.270 with a good 130 grain bullet is close to killing perfection, I shot the first 12 elk of my life with that combo. My .270 shoots 130 grain much better than the 150's. If you want to shoot a 180 grain get a .300 win mag

270 Win. is good stuff.

The 130 grain Partition and the old solid base bullets gave me a boat load of DRT kills on game animals. Okay not a real boat load, but a few dozen..

I have to agree that I don't see a need for a bullet that heavy in a .270 for elk. I've always used 150 grain Partitions but thinking seriously of changing to the 140 grain Accubond. I'm getting some great groups using it and 4831 and I prefer the short cut as well.

180 gr would essentially reduce the 270 to a 30-30. No reason to do that.

Killed my only elk 25 plus years ago with Jacks favorite but was running the 150 grain Partision. Dropped with one thru the lungs at about 250 yards. I put one more into the elk, but it was not needed. I would have no problem using the same combo today. Good hunting, goodshot

Excellent all around advice and I will use it and stick to my 130's and 140's.

Had a elk steak sandwich at the Woodsmens Field Days and have not looked back since.

Depends on how big the boat is. You'd sink mine.

While haven't tried the 180gr Woodleighs, I have used the 150gr. Partition for my for my first 5 elk starting in 1976, switched to the 30-06 in 1982.
After that I got educated beyond my intelligence (reading gun rags) and tried all sorts of crazy stuff.
I'm sure the 150's still work fine.

..not for nothing but I failed to mention the Swift A Frame 140 gr. (Not to take away from the original thread.) Although it was not a elk that I shot it was a whitetail that was dropped in it's tracks with this bullet. Vertebrae was the kill zone and the animal was killed instantly.

A simple core-lokt will work for a spine shot.
