It only took 20 years to find a straight model 70 in 300 H&H that wasn't all boogered up. Just a hunting rifle, not museum quality but exactly what I wanted.
I just recently got into the model 70's and I wish I had started dope instead. It would have been less expensive and addicting.
I started with a '38 model 70 in 220 swift, then a 250 savage carbine (early 80's vintage) and now the '51 in 300. I recently found a SUPER Pre-64 in 375 H&H that is calling my name. I mentioned the rifle to the wife and she called my name too! That one may have to wait a while.

Had a model 54 220 swift once, should have kept it.

Congrats! Now exactly how long do you have to wait to get the big brother? Man, I'd be doing all kinda honey do's, kicking little pebbles and pouting!

I have a couple of 375's but not a model 70. I have an old Interarms with SPECTACULAR wood that shoots like the glory of God. How many 375's does a guy need?

At least 3, I have to look, I might be short one. The word "need" does not exist in a true rifle looney's vocabulary, especially when speaking of pre 64 70's.

I will gladly give you the name and number of the guy that has that pre-64 in 375. Sweet rifle but it isn't worth the divorce for me.

160, I am not a Winchester collector and only have a couple..mostly family guns..But that Swift and .300 are the finest..great picks..I had a model 70 that was just what you have found..a good shooter, but sold it to someone who wanted it more than I..
My old trap shooting pal, now passed on, was a real collector of model 70's..He had some gems..My two favorites were a prewar in .300 in a supergrade, and a Swift with an old Noske (?) scope .. I had a chance at it first, but knew I would have to tinker with it..so I told the guys to look up my buddy..the barrel was wrapped in tape..When he bought the rifle, and took the tape off, it was mint..the serial # was either 725 or 750 just now I don't remember...Great finds, enjoy..

I have a few Model 70's in caliber 300 H&H (including a pair of "Bull Guns" - and one is a pre-war Bull Gun that is marked simply "300 Magnum" on the massive factory barrel).
I am a little "recoil aware" if you know what I mean.
Many years ago I took advantage of a friends offer to shoot his 1950's vintage Model 70 Standard Rifle in caliber 300 H&H Magnum.
He had a nifty Bausch & Lomb 2x8 variable on it and I fired a couple of 180 grain Winchester Silvertips through it at a 100 yard target.
That Rifle kicked me so hard I refused to shoot a third shot - and yet somehow my flinches must have been identical as those two shots I took were nearly touching each other there on the 100 yard target.

My '55 standard grade 300H&H was not really pleasant to shoot either, that metal butt plate.. I bought a beater stock that had been cut down and put a limbsaver on it. Other benefit is that I don't worry about the pristine stock when I go into the field with it. The 300H&H is a classic.

Thanks guys! I dropped the hammer on her 5 times off the bench and it shoots one hole! Great rifle. It is not as pleasant to shoot as the Remington 721 or No. 1 but it is alright. You only need to shoot once anyway..............
