Hi Gents, My wife and I want to celebrate our 20th anniversary on an Alaskan trip this August. The plan is to fly into Anchorage, rent a car and find a lodge to stay for 4-5 days and fish, hike and kick back. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> I'd be much obliged if anyone could recommend a few places. Thanks!

Which way are you looking to go:
Rustic or comfort
Hike to or drive to the front door
Those sorts of hints...

Great choice for an anniversary vacation, I would say! If you have never been here before, it would be hard to beat a trip to Denali NP, IMO. It takes several hours to drive up there, but that is the best time of year to see fall tundra colors, and you stand a pretty fair chance of seeing the mountain itself. (hides in cloud much of the time, but can open up on short notice!) You will be on the road system at peak tourist time, but depending on where you live in the lower 48, it may seem pretty uncrowded overall. But the better lodges tend to fill up fast (as in, several months ahead of time), so don't wait to book something.
Another great spot is Seward. Easy drive from ANC, or you could even take the train from ANC to Seward. Great scenery, great fishing in salt for silvers and halibut that time of year.
I like Kodiak and Cordova too, but you will not have time for them this trip. Enjoy!!

if you like crowds your plan is ok. head toward the kenia, there's a lodge or two down that way. been a while, but it seems like around wynn's store they have some cabins and there's a pretty nice lodge in that area also. if you don't like crowds consider flying to anc and flying to a remote lodge. there are many to chose from.

IB and JMJ are right. There is quite a range of possibilities. good full-service remote flyout lodges can run from $500 to $700 per day each person. plus the cost of the flight to get you there and back. But if you can afford it, jump right in!

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

I appreciate the feedback. I have done a little looking around & have found some lodges within a 30 minute flight of ANC. Your right they are pricey, but i figure the old girl needs to be spoiled after 20 years with me. Surprisingly, 3 of the lodges I looked at were wide open.

First part of August is prime time for Silvers out of Seward. Since they fish mostly in the Bay, the chance of being blown off the water is reduced. Halibut charters are somewhat more problematic, due to open water/weather considerations. If you would also like to fish a lovely alpine lake for chunky (and delicious) rainbows in the same general area, pm me and I'll spill my guts.

getting on the water is a good choice, The Kenai has several cabins that are rustic and can be rented from the wildlife refuge or the state parks.
I live down here on the Kenai and have worked on several of these cabins over the years with our scout troops to earm merit badges etc. You can fly into some of them in the summer and get away for a great price. most are about 35 to 45 per night and some are free. Canoe the Kenai canoe trails system can make for a great hike and canoe adventure. And if you are quick, you can rent the cabin at lower russian lake and get to see the salmon jumping up the falls and stay at the cabin, complete with row boat..
You can hike from hope to Cooper landing over the resurection trail and stay in cabins along the way.. lots of choices.. for not a lot of money.. and the solitude is incredible
