I used to have an Alaska State business license, when I had a commercial fishing boat, but it has long expired.

I was just called in by the local 'Seattle based, Alaska labelled major airlines' for some quick maintenance checks. Their regular A&P mechanics were all out of town. No problem, all went well. Plane was seriously broke, so my role was pretty easy (couldn't fix it, need parts.)

Where it gets complicated, was when they told me to send them an invoice for my services. I know about how much to charge (2.5hrs) for my time. But should I get a new business license? If not, how do I address tax issues, or even write up a professional looking invoice?

Thoughts?

hmm.. not an expert BW, but I'd write up an invoice, add a fuel surcharge, and then put it as "misc" income on the taxes.

I work for another major airline up here and when dealing with a small "company" (if you will). we need a tax code # (your identifier with the IRS) and an invoice that says "invoice" on it, doesn't matter how primitive.

At that point you are a contractor not a business entity. They should cut you a 1099.

I did some work for a company, similar situation to you BW. Now that I recall, they did 1099 me, and I just gave the 1099 to my tax preparer.
