Just perusing some local reports, and saw this posted on a board I frequent. This fish, undoubtedly a female, was taken by a local islander fishing out of CT on a day charter. Broke the magical 50 lb. easy, I'm sure, though I didn't see that an actual weight was taken. It was 51 1/2 in length and 29 1/2 in girth. Beautiful slob of a bass, eh?

One of these days I will get my holy grail of bass on the deck. Congrats to the angler. Fish was taken on a trolled bucktail, likely simulating a squid, which bass will readily feed on.

Roger, you gettin' ready or what? wink

Good one for sure.
My holy grail too. Came close a few times, but no see-gar.
Just checked the boat. Thank God for self bailing with the 3-5 inches of rain. The Sound will take on a coffee appearance when the rain finally ends.

Context. The angler is pretty small.

There's an old math formula I remember for getting an appox. weight for Stripers.
Length x Girth xGirth divided by 800 =weight in lbs. (I thinks)

My biggest was a 47 lb. male taken in San Francisco Bay bouncing an anchovy off the bottom while trying for Halibut...I know it was a male because he spooged all over the deck once I got him in the boat...

Fugger.

BTW, we're gettin' down to the short strokes on the negotiations. I'll keep you posted.

I expect you have negotiation skills beyond my imagination. Fortunately, I hired your female twin separated at birth to do mine.

You can eat striped bass as sushi/sashimi, and I've had it lots of times, but it's fair at best to my palate. Somewhat bland, and more often than not, tougher than what I like in raw fin fish, even the belly meat. Now, broiled, fried, baked, in seafood stews and chowdahs is a different story altogether, but again, raw, not so much...

Doc, that guy may be smallish, but that fish ain't. Look at the numbers again. 4+ feet long, and a girth almost the size of the average 160 lb man...

As long as your head is still high (where it belongs) and you're as happy as can be,considering, I'm more than content.

L, how are the big ones for eating out East?

Lots of them around the California Delta, but the big ones are often full of mercury, and most say to C&R and let them breed.

I've enjoyed it myself, simply baked with some soy sauce & panko bread crumbs on top smile

It is, and I am. My pit bull... er, I mean, my attorney... is doing yeoman service. And yes, I'm as happy as I can be, considering. Looks like your 10K estimate is gonna be damn near right on.

I may have to start listening to your counsel on college football betting, mi amigo!

My greatest consolation is I don't have any damn Yorkies around here to contend with. The small cats-that-bark have all moved back to Wisconsin.

I'll step up so you don't lose another 10K.

I'm happy for you, doctor.

Damn. I knew you were good but that's real good.

As I'm sure you know, stripers in the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding waters is big business here.
