What are the criteria to consider when deciding on whether to go with porcelain or stainless steel grilling grates?

Looks like I'm going to Home Depot to pick up a Weber Genesis. Thanks to all who answered. The Campfire does it again!

What are the criteria to consider when deciding on whether to go with porcelain or stainless steel grilling grates? Stainless is your best option. Over the last year I have replaced all of the porcelain on my BGE's with stainless. Porcelain grates are fine until they begin to crack and flake (which they all do sooner or later) and then rust from salty seasonings becomes a problem. Stainless is not cheap, but good stuff seldom is. Mike

RS Good Call. Buy Right and Buy Once. I resisted springing for a top of the line Weber Genesis for a loooong time. And went through a bunch of big box grills in the process. Finally, did a TON of online research/talked to owners and bit the bullet. Couldn't be happier after using the thing 3-4 times a week for the past 45 days. I'm a value-guy and the Weber Genesis is definitely "worth the money". MADE IN THE USA TOO. That means something to me. NB

My old gas grill schit the bed this spring and I'm glad it did. I had forgotten how good charcoal was in comparison. Don't plan on going back to gas and tasteless food again anytime soon.

There's a brand new grill design out that's charcoal on one side and gas on the other. It's getting good reviews but I've not read them.
Seems if you have a Genesis and a Green Egg (and a hot tub), the [bleep] will come over and be your friend, regardless.

Bob, the porcelain coated grills are a no-no unless you like your food crunchy and enjoy visiting your DDS.
BTW, there are a few aftermarket suppliers of cast iron grates out there for various makes and models of grills. Put 'em in your kitchen oven on the clean setting and EVERYTHING gets turned into a white dust. Brush off, reseason and you're golden till they need to be cleaned again.

I've always preferred the cast iron grates to all others myself.

Thanks Denny. Always preferred the cast iron. Have them now but I'm having trouble getting a good gas flow to my outer 2 of 4 burners.
I'd love to buy one gas grill that could last me at least 5 years.

Guessing I could do some sort of rig off my Blichmann for brewing that would work okay. Best damned gas burner I've ever seen. SUPER quiet and sips fuel too.

If you get the basic Genesis(no side burner) you have the option of stainless grates for an extra $50 on certain models. Genesis Limited or something like that. We bought one last Spring and it is sweet, should last a long time. http://www.truevalue.com/product/Ou...pc/12/c/178/sc/1583/25697.uts#activeTab1

Don't know about gas grills,...but the topic brought back a very old memory.
My dad built the house I grew up in.
We moved into it as soon as it was complete enough to keep the rain off. I was 4 years old.
The kitchen wasn't fully functional, so he brought home a huge cast iron cauldron that he found somewhere,..sat it in the yard beside the house.
He filled it with sand to within a few inches from the top, then set some type of grill on top of it. I think it was a wire shelf from an old refridgerator.
Every meal was a cookout until the kitchen was finished.
I don't know what ever happened to that thing.
I'd like to find one like it somewhere.
It made a killer, family sized charcoal grill.
