Yesteday we had Boyd come over for some woodchuck hunting. We had a really good time. Boyd brought along the tape made by some of the guys that shoot at Williamsport (1022 yards). There were 2 kills at 750 yards, one at 850 yards and one at 1200 yards, among others. It was amazing how that Match King bullet just dropped some of those whitetails in their tracks. Two of the deer killed at the 750 and 850 yard mark where killed using a 300 Whby. This rifle was completely factory with the exception of the Hart brake.

I can't wait to get over to Williamsport next weekend to see how I fair at 1022 yards using my 300 win mag and 180gr ballistic tips - one of my deer rifles.

For those that don't have the skill necessary to kill deer at 750 plus yards, do youself a favor, pick the brains of these long range guys and get the video. It was an interesting tape - for sure.

Don,From the performance I saw yesterday.Out of Boyds "light" gun.I see no reason, why shooting deer over 1000 yards with Sierra Matchkings would be a problem . Very Impressive equipment.I fact I think im going to take a hard look at usuing the matchking in my 300 Win mag for deer.

Hey Dave, you better watch what you say.Match King's on Deer?Them there word's might just start a fight...I am gonna try a faster powder with the 125's in the ultra.Would like to get 4150fps with them. What bullet would you and Don recommend. The MK's take a pretty big chunk out of them,But I wanna turn them into chunk's.Not just take chunk's out of them.I'm also gonna try those Berger 52's in the 22-250.If you guy's are gonna be at Willimsport next weekend let me know. We'll spot for each other.....Have a good day...Later.....Boyd....

Boyd,

If we come over to Williamsport next weekend I will just bring you a box of 52gr (moly coated) bergers to try - if you want. I still have about 500 left. I have some 185gr moly coated berger (VLD) bullets that I am going to try in my 300 win mag - on deer. If they perform 1/2 as well on deer as the 52gr bergers do on woodchucks they won't be going anyplace but down. [Linked Image]

The rate of twist - recommended by Berger - for the 185gr VLD out of a 30 cal is 1 in 11. Since my 300 WM is 1 in 12 I won't know for sure if it will stabalize that 185gr or not. If it does, I will work it out to 750 yards and hopefully kill a few deer to see the results.

Will let you know about next weekend mid week next week. Have to see what the work load is first.

Boyd, Berger makes a 125gr and 135gr bullet in 30 caliber, among many others. If you want to stay "light" those are 2 good options. The BC on the 125gr is .328 and the BC on the 135gr is .358. Those are both flat base bullets.

Have a good one,
DonKnows,

Are you SEEKING long shots like that on deer? Or do you just feel you can't get any closer? No matter how good you are, it seems that there are a lot of variables beyond the shooter's control that can make 700+ yard shots risky.

Waders,

Yes, I am seeking to kill deer as far away as I am physically capable. I have already killed a "lot" of deer at 100 or less yards. As of right now my self imposed limit is 650 yards and I hope to increase that to 1000 yards or more.

Boyd,You might think about trying a 125g Ballistic tip.If you can get them to shoot, might just be the ticket for making the chunks fly.

These same guys have had boards of their own and they all die. Now they are over here trying to pi$$ in the fire to cause more stink. Loosers all, could care less about ethics or our animals, just how far they can hit a living target. JMHO -- no

An' yall wonder why the anti-huntin' crowd has gained so much ground lately. My grandaddy woulda laid my scalp open with his barrel ifn I started poppin' off at deer outta range. These fellers musta been raised by wimmins an' breast fed into their 20s.

Far as this old hunter is concerned this thread is dead just like the feelings of long range SHOOTERS. The names are known and remembered as undesirable. When you shoot at paper targets perhaps you will gain some following and respect, until then hunters would appreciate it if you stayed under your own heading, Good by!! JMHO -- no

Good shooting has nothing to do with this one. Anyone who starts blazing away at a deer 1000 yards distant simply does not care about wounded game. What if that deer decides to take a step as you pull that trigger? What if a zephyr of a breeze is blowing somewhere in between you and the animal? It takes a half second or more for the bullet to reach a target that far away. And Yes, I compete at 1000 yards, have done so for nearly 20 years. But Paper only...no big game at those distances. Thanks for that Eagleye. As to shooting targets at ungodly distances if it makes anyone happy to do that I am all for it. Have fun doing it.

As to shooting at game animals like that, well, it isn't illegal but my old grandma taught me that if I couldn't say any thing good about somthing or somebody to just keep my mouth shut.
