Congress may let student loan interest rates double July 1, but some federal workers and congressional staff likely are protected from the impact by a taxpayer-funded benefit that provided more than $20 million last year for them to pay down their college debts.

Congress created the benefit more than 10 years ago to make government jobs more appealing to job candidates who could get higher-paying jobs in the private sector. Meanwhile, a 2007 law that cut student loan interest rates in half will expire July 1, and Congress has been unable to reach a deal to extend it.

If we weren't paying to give illegals free educations things might be a little better.

These former college students aren't owed ANYTHING!

They borrowed money at a specified interest rate. Obammy lowered the rate with the help of the Dem controlled congress to buy votes. Now it is scheduled to return to the agreed-upon rate.

Just pay off your phuggin loans - like I did!

My daughters loan was twice the rate of the loans now. She had it paid off four years after she was out of school.

This isn't about interest rates, it's about Federal employees getting hundreds of millions in student loans paid off by taxpayers. I want my money back.

A review of congressional spending records by USA TODAY and the non-profit Sunlight Foundation, a watchdog group, showed that the House of Representatives spent almost $15 million last year to pay down staffers' student loans, while the Senate spent almost $6 million. Members of Congress are not eligible for the program.

Federal agencies � which provide more detailed information � spent about $72 million in 2011, the last year for which data are available, to pay down student loans for 10,134 federal workers.

Many in congress and their staffers get student loans that never have to be paid back. Time for them to get off the tit.

It wouldn't be QUITE as bad if any of them had learned anything.

Those people get paid well they don't need welfare. You and I make less and don't qualify.

once upon a time, a college education was free to California residents....the state looked at it as an investment in California's future...

but then the welfare state stepped in, and now you only get a free education in California if you are an illegal immigrant from Mexico or some other Latin American Schitthole...

The education system needs a overhaul, a million times more than the health care system does...

off topic on this, but my local county has lost funding it has had for over 50 years on timber sales made on forest service lands within the county... our Sheriff's Dept has been on the national news of what little law enforcement that we have in this country.. it is a disneyland for druggies, thieves etc...

the Sheriff's Dept lost 90% of its staff....

however, Salem ( the Capitol, run by Democrats) and the Obama Administration, sent the county 388,000 bucks to put in 5 new bus stops.. in front of the Welfare Office, DHS etc.... so all of these welfare bums have a nice place to go to and from to collect their entitlements....

why waste it on education, or police protection, when you can spend it on more welfare recipients????

And free medical insurance.

If those two things stopped you'd see many of them headed back home.

So, we're better off now that students borrow money from the government instead of banks???

And no car insurance.

And of course they will vote for demoncraps. The soul-less traitors calling themselves democrats, will do anything to maintain their power so they can line their pockets while plundering the country.

That is not the issue of the article or the post. The government passed a law to pay the student loans of government employees and in one year it seems about 100 million was used for that purpose. Most people won't ever know because they are too lazy to even read about such things, so it's OK. Only 100 million.

We're screwed.

I don't read the schit let alone tire of it. Far too much out there to optimistically chase in my short life time. Can't understand why folks chase schit that only pisses them off? All there is in retirement?r
