I'm heading up to Ketchikan then POW island.

I've been checking online weather forecasts. Looks to be pretty mild temp-wise.
Rain forecasts are kind of vague but we are going with the expectation that it will rain at least some of the time during every day.
Is that pretty accurate?

We have seen more sun in May and June this year than the last 4 years put together ... in fact we have had some very hot days.

Who knows ? It could start raining and not stop till it snows.

Or it could be a record breaking no rain summer like we had back in '94 or '95 ... when we had 3 months without rain.

Its been hot here in ketchikan the past couple of days, who knows what it will be like tomorrow. I don't even bother looking at the weather forecast anymore.

Send me a pm if you want to go grab a beer or something before you head to POW. I am in town until the 5th.

Complain, complain, complain. Seems like that's all we Alaskans do when it comes to the weather. "When's breakup gonna arrive"? It basically never did. "Whew, 85 to 90 deg. for 2 weeks - sure wish it'd cool off". It did cool off. "Wouldn't ya know it, rain & crap for Golden Days - I'm not goin to the parade or the Rubber Ducky Race". "Well, it's Aug., time for the fair. Ooops!! Rain & cold again! Guess I'll just stay home." laugh
Sorry, guys, had to write it.
Later, Bear in Fairbanks

Years ago, a local farmer told this to me.

"As a rule, man's a fool, when it's hot, he wants it cool; When it's cool, he wants it hot, always wanting what is not."

"The day I went to work everybody showed up to watch Johnny Luster work. Well, they had a wheelbarrow there, and said I was to push that thing around all day. I looked at it, then turned around and headed for the mountians..."

Funny thing is my brother finally came up and visited for the first time this summer. I told him typically around the 4th of July is good weather. We've had an unusally nice summer, basically sun and blue skies for all of June and most of July has been the same. He was checking the weather before coming up and saw how nice it was. Of course the week he was here we had gray skies and temps in the 50's with some drizzle.

My suggestion to prepare for AK any time of year is take the average high and add 25 deg, take the average low and subtract 25 deg, prepare for blue skies and sun, rain, snow and you'll have appropriate clothing. You can expect everything from wanting to have long johns, fleece and rain gear to shorts and a tee-shirt, and could see that extreme from one day to the next, or sometimes within the same day. I've spent alot of days on the water this year and while I've had a record number of days in shorts and a t shirt, I've also had a day where I was bundled up and still caught a chill.
