I came across a stack of metal bars and the old man that had them said they where Babbitt. They came from a big lumber mill and printed on the bars reads, Federated - Fry Metals. I'm wondering if anyone has run across these before. For sawmill applications what composition would these be and can I cast with it.

Sorry I don't know the composition but they used to make bearings. They made cast iron bearing bodies that you would pour babbit bearings into. They were easy to replace out in the field just pour a new bearing in the body when the old one wore out. One of my jobs was to scrape the bearings to fit the shaft and scrape the lubricating grooves in them. The bearings would have been used anywhere large shaft was used. We also had steel hammer handles that we cast babbit heads on. The babbit hammers were used to fit gears and shivs on shafts without marring them when you tapped them in place, pretty much a rebuildable deadblow hammer.

Here's a whole article on Babbit and bullet casting including refrences to manufactures.
