Guy's, I know that the collector's are the main thing around here, but I have a 99E (rotary) that the shell sticks in sometimes. I keep it cleaned and oiled, but every now and then one just sticks. I never gave it much thought, but on gunbroker there is a 99C with this problem. Is it a common problem? or just bad ammo?
What mechanical issues could cause this before mine gets worse?
Thanks Jerry

What caliber? Factory or handloads?
How hard is it to remove the stuck case?
I'd be looking at the extractor for wear or weak spring.
Second, look for a rough chamber. That can be polished out.
Or, send it to the Home for Broken Savages in Houston and I'll put it out of its misery.

I know the caliber doesn't matter much, but I was messing around with different ammo before deer season and had brand new Winny 308 cases stick. This was the secnd 99 it happened to. First case was a rough chamber, second case : . My F just didn't like that box of ammo, the next box functioned fine. Are you using handloads or factory ammo?

Thanks guys,
The caliber is 300 sav. in my gun and I believe it was a 308 in the gunbroker gun.
The load that I was using was 150 grain winchester power point.
Hope it is not the round, since I don't reload and this is about the only round I can get in my area.
The gun is clean, but it may be wear on the ejector lugs. I have shot a lot of critters with this rifle.

Check the Chamber! If It is a Little Big the Shell Will Expand and Stick. Winchester had some Brass that was a Little Softer that Caused Some Expansion, And Caused Sticking on Some Chambers. Steve

Thanks for the advice! I took it out and ran a few rounds of Federal and some Win. ammo through it and guess what. The Fed. that I had bought a year ago when in K.C. shot fine, but the Win. PP stuck(1 out of 3)!! Guess I'll have to find another source of ammo for this rifle anyway.

I would seen an e-mail to Winchester with the lot Number and see what they say...if they say anything. Also, might just be a "lot" problem. Try a different lot and see if the problem goes away. Your chamber might be on the tight side and the round on the high side...both in spec but not compatible.

Arkie, I picked up a 99E in 308 last year with some new Winchester ammo and the Winchester brass lengthened a LOT after being fired. Shells didn't stick and did eject okay, but action was a hard to open. That brass went straight into the trash..
Other ammo is better and the brass doesn't lengthen to ridiculous lengths, but the action is still sometimes tougher to open than it should be. It's just my range gun so I don't really care, but glad to hear mine ain't the only goofy one out there.
For hunting, I'll be sticking with my pre-mil EG in 300.. it's a quality rifle;)

Actually, the Savage chambers vary a lot I've discovered over the years. The .250 Saddle gun I just got wouldn't begin to chamber the loads for my post war F and it just barely handled the loads for my 110. I've seen about the same variation in the .300s.
If yours is newer the chamber may be a little tight.
But, in all the Savages I've shot, I never had one stick either.

Arkie...
Rough chambers due to years of being "let go" (cleaning-wise) or a soft run of brass by cartridge makers... or even "hot" handloads can all have the same effect... cartridges stick in the rifle's chamber and the action is hard to open due to the sticking (in the first two instances) rather than due to high chamber pressure (the last instance).
In addition, worn or rounded-off extractor edges can also have the same effect.
If you can't get an answer on your own... take your rifle to a good... repeat... "GOOD" gunsmith and you'll probably get a definitive answer & the problem solved there.

Good smith's in this neck of the woods is as scarice as hen's teeth!
I think my extractor lugs may be a little worn and the winchester ammo is hard on it's gums!
I'll try to find a gun smith that knows 99's.
Thanks for the info! Jerry

Advice is good no matter what side of the fence you are standing on! As a matter of fact MY 99E that we are discussing is a Pre-mil 7xxxxx. I do own a 1982 99E that shoots fine, just have to brace your feet to pull the d#$& trigger!

You need to check that pre-mil E out again. None were made in that serial range.

OOps! foot in mouth! I could of swore that the serial no. was in the 700,000 range. Maybe it is not an E after all. It's at my father-in-laws, in his safe. I am going up today, so I'll verify numbers on it.
Because, I don't think the serial no. is going to be as low as MD stated (1934's) in a thread long ago!
I'll get the info. and you can tell me what I have.
Thanks Jerry

I'M BAAAACK!!:p
Ok, here's the low down, I don't know Sh@#! and couldn't pick him out of a line up if my life depended on it!!:o
The so called 99E is as follows:
SN# 7523xx 24" barrel pistol grip
SAVAGE model 99 Z on the left side of the receiver.
85% orig. blueing Schnable forend Looks to have cut checkering But sadly (for collectors) a Pach. White Line Recoil Pad. Othe than the recoil pad, the wood is 85-90% looks to be factory D & T (please read opening statement)
I could not find a lever boss code (cause my father-in-law would not turn loose of the rifle! I guess he thought I was repoing it!) HA HA HA!!!!
He reaffirmed that I would get it back when he died.

It's an EG and a factory drilled one at that. Probably made in 1955. The perfect deer rifle!
