Or anything else in that same general burning-rate range: IMR4895, H-4895, TAC, RL-15, CFE223, XMR8208, etc. etc. etc.

My .308's shoot great 125-178 and my 06 great with 165 NP and Varget. Winchester 760 might work well too.

I've always used IMR-4064 for 125 and 150 gr loads in .30-06 with great results, but Varget is pretty close.

Thanks. Most of the time we'll be using 165-gr. bullets, so a powder should be good for that bullet weight. I was thinking Varget, but the other suggestions all seem to be good ideas in the same burn rate. If Varget works, that would be good because of its temp. tolerance.

It is the cat's meow for mine! I use 50 grains with 308 125 NAB/NBT, 45 grains with 168 trainers, 30-06 165NP with 49 grains. Good luck and let us know how it goes.....

I use Varget for both. When I began reloading I looked at various manuals and picked Varget because it showed good things in both cartridges. It worked well enough that I never bothered switching.

I always get a huge kick out of these threads about one bullet, one powder, one cartridge, one rifle, etc. It would put the ammo, powder, gunmakers right out of business, and none of us would need more than a four gun safe. grin

My go to rifle powder has always been H 4895. I use it for anything from .223 to 8X56R. If H4895 was not available I used IMR 4895. While the numbers are the same the two powders are not grain for grain equivalents. My IMR recipes are always a bit lighter than my H recipes.

Or was it the other way around? Too lazy to go look it up in my reloading manuals right now.

I have some 4064 on hand, so I'll try that first. 4064 works well in my 308 but I haven't tried it in 30-06. My only complaint about 4064 is that those little logs don't lend themselves to good metering. If I'm not happy with the results with both cartridges then Varget will be my next try.
