I own a 99E (Late model) bought new in 1982.
I would like to add a peep, but there is no tang mounting
holes. I heard that Williams made one that used the
D$T for the rear scope mount. It already has Williams (BAD)
open sights, so I'm looking for usability, not flash. We have already hashed out how %$$% ugly the late "E" is, but it is a good hunter and my eyes aint what they use to
be. I tried a scope, and I believe the D$T was screwed up
at the factory cause it is impossible to line up!

If anybody has any info. on the williams such as cost, or how it actually mounts....OR another alternative please
help.<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif" alt="" />

Thanks
Jerry

The Williams is the FP99 (Fool Proof). They'll run you about $45 at your local gunshop or $50 if you wanna fight for one on Ebay (without shipping), makes sense right? I just saw one go for $75 on Ebay last week. Apparently some people don't like to go to the store anymore and actually buy something. If I was a smart man I'd go and buy 20 of them and put them on Ebay one at a time.

Now the good news. Get yourself a Lyman 57SB when one turns up. They're made for the tang safety 99's and are alot better than the FP's. Even check with a local smith, he might have one or any sight collectors on this sight (sorry I don't have one for ya).

I had 70's mfg E and the scope base holes were way out of wack. I was still able to scope it by using 2 piece weaver bases and burris rings with the inserts that let you adjust for mis- alignment.

Just another possible option for you.

Thanks Joe and Weagle! I think I will check around for a Lyman 57SB, or if I can't find one, I will try it Weagle's way.

Thanks Again!

This is what I love about this site, GOOD info from GOOD
PEOPLE!

An older Weaver K2.5X in Weaver mounts will run about the same as a good receiver sight...if a scope is an option.

Thanks Rick!
I think I know where one of those just happens to laying.

My brother-in-law took one off his rifle a couple of years ago, and put a newer scope on it. I will check with him cause he never gets rid of anything.

Is there enough space in the mounting blocks to adjust windage, or will I need to use spacers on one side of my
scope?

However, if anybody has a Lyman 57SB they could part with I would be interested. I never seen a 99 with a peep on it until I started visiting the auction sites and this fourm, and I like the look a lot. Here in Arkansas, most shots are under 100 yds. so open sites are fine if you can see them.
A peep is a lot easier for old eyes like mine than open sites.

ARKIE99, if you use the scope, you need to get Burris Signature rings. They have eccentric inserts in 05, 10, or 20 thou. off-sets. You can use them front and rear for a total of 40 thou. of correction. The rings are available for Weaver or Redfield type bases.

Thanks L2S,

So, Burris signature rings and Weaver 2 piece bases are
what I need for a scope and a Lyman 57SB peep. I am going shoping tomorrow! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

what I need for a scope OR a Lyman 57SB peep. Would be difficult to have both on the same rifle at the same time. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

for my E that woulden't line up I used a leoupuld one piece base you can adjust the rear ring horizontally enough to zero the scope. they must of had a run on Es with crooked scope holes yours is the 4 or 5th one I am aware of.. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Sorry, can't type plain.
I mean that I will look for both, then make a decission on which one will work.
I will also consider the leoupuld base (thks Hubert). I have
heard of them being used on 99 before.

any pro's or con's?

Going to have to get a bigger piece of paper for my list!

That alignment problem wasn't limited to the E's. I had a .308 CD that was off a good 1/4" from the receiver to the tip of the barrel. A Redfiield or similar mount will make up for that at a specific yardage, but what happens at 200 yds. when you sighted it in at 100?

I sent it down the road...

Has anybody seen this in a pre-mil 99?
I am a little concerned about my next buy,
since the peepers are not as good as they used to be.

I know that my 1955 "EG" that was factory D&T is very accurate with or without a scope. But I don't want to
fight my father-in-law for it until my wife gets tired of
me (hopefully not for a while).

I will just spend my money on another Shooter EG...After
I fix this one!:D <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Millet makes rings that adjustable front and rear for windage. The good things about the burris rings is that you can adjust elevation as well as windage.

Arkie, your odds of getting one of these problem children is VERY small. It's WAY more likely you'll get something that shoots far better than it should even given the prices you sometimes find today.

Example, my $400'ish '46 EG in 300 Savage shoots as accurately as the $700-$800 Tikka my uncle just picked up. And mine has more class:-) Can't say that for my E, but it still stills 1.5" groups.

Given all that, I'd always try to find a pre-mil that I like rather than a post-mil.
