Clearly you haven't heard that if you can buy the ammo at Walmart, it's no good.

Just Kidding

If you make it a .270, it will automatically be better looking...

I cureently own 2 30-06's. a 270, a 300 savage, a few 308s and more than a few 223s. Plus a 300 and 338 win mag and an 8mm mag.

Keith im just putting it together for fun and well its been a while since ive seen a 270vs 30-06 thread.

Its going to be a "poor mans custom"

Either a howa barreled action or a stevens. Either put into a B&C Medalist stock and then "kryloned and topped with either a redfield or Nikon Pro-staff

you need a 300 rum, everyone should have one.

Roger i just sold a wildcat based on the 300 rum. It was necked down to 25 I bought off a buddy of mine who copied it from a rifle Russell Thornberry uses. Killed whitetails way out there with 100 grain Barnes Tsx bullets. Bought it with 80 rounds of ammo. And shot maybe 30 of those at various objects.

The .280 Remington is a superb compromise.....

As to your original question.....the .30-06 gives you a tad bit more latitude for elk and moose.....the .270 gives you a tad better trajectory for pronghorns and mule deer....and the net difference is close to nothing.....flip a coin and go for it.

Git,
If I'm not mistaken, there was a 270 vanguard listed in the classifieds a few days back. Maybe had an extra barrel for the vastly superior 280 remington?

But. The two barreled action choices I listed do not offer the 280. Lets try and stay in the perameters i listed

I just built a "retro wildcat" on a .300 RUM donor. Retro, as in going back to the parent, .404J.

Whoops... frown

Did someone say stick to the parameters... blush

Thanks Joel. But this project has a baseline. Thati includes common ammo selection at any "big box" store. For someone who doesnt reload

Ha! I understand. Take a look at that add though, he's got a 270 vanguard in stainless with a B&C stock already attached. I just bumped it to the top.

Lots o 270 factory loads around where I am at. And brass, and bullets.

When I was much younger I used to turn up my nose at 270's because everyone had one and the 280ai is mo better. Now I kinda lean towards simplicity and utility and availability.

I vote 270 fwiw
