But. The two barreled action choices I listed do not offer the 280. Lets try and stay in the perameters i listed OK, then I'll go with Scott. 25-06

If you plan to hunt in France, then the only choice is 270.

.270 My .270 does most of the work these days for anything above .224 class. Only one that comes close for actual use is my .338

Go with the 30-06 - it'll take anything on the continent. If you go with the 270, chipmunks are the largest game you can hunt - just refer to the sacred writings of Elmer Keith.

I'm down to 3 30-06's. Not sure why anyone would pick a 270 over a 30-06. If you want something besides a 30-06 get a 338WM.

I've done a lot of shooting with both the 270 and the 30-06. Both are excellent calibers so it depends on what you'll use it for.
The 270 shoots a slightly smaller bullet and is a superb deer gun. I've also shot a lot elk with it using 150 gr bullets. I've never had one get away and most have taken only 1 shot but I do think they could use just a bit more bullet for cleaner kills. I've never tried them, but 180 gr bullets are now available for the 270. Needless to say, they're long and possibly in some guns they'll have to be seated very deep which will take up too much powder room.
The 30-06 is one of the classics with 180 gr bullets. It'll easily handle almost everything in North America. If you have a mind to hunt AK brownies, 200 gr or larger bullets can be used in it, too.
So, I'd say that if your game tends to be on the smaller side, go with the 270 and if on the larger side, go with 30-06 but you won't go wrong no matter which you choose.

"The .270 Winchester is a "damned adequate coyote rifle."-Elmer Keith That is the beauty of the 270, it really is a great varmint round and a great big game round. There is a lot to like except the super high BC bullets are not available like the 6.5 or the 7mm's. But then that is another reason to like the 270... you are out shooting stuff with one or two loads instead of scratching your head all day looking for the one special perfect load and trying seventy different bullets. In my mind you buy a 270 factory rifle and get in the field... today.

For the Wally World hunters who buy a gun and a box of cartridges, I'd agree with you... DF

The new Nosler LR Accubond runs some pretty high BC #s, if that is your thing! For myself, as Rock Chuck wrote, if you are primarily a deer hunter I like the 270 better. (less recoil, for one thing) If I hunted moose primarily, in grizzly country (which up here is virtually anywhere in moose country) I'd feel somewhat better with a 30-06 though.

Dead critters will pile up with either one. "What difference does it make?"
