Just brainstorming here. Have any of you folks seen these steel mesh charcoal reducing rings that are being made/sold over on ebay for the Eggs? You drop them down inside the bottom of the Egg & it keeps the lump more contained as to avoid burning a large amount during your smaller/shorter grilling sessions. Seems to me like it could help get more complete burns from the lump, also. The same folks are making these 4" tall dividers that are made of 3/16" steel for sectioning off areas of the firebox as to contain your lump into certain sections. Might be handy for doing a direct * indirect cook at the same time. I doubt these items would serve a huge purpose in the smaller sized Eggs, but in an XL I'm thinking they could really make it much more versatile. Do a search for "big green egg" over on ebay & you'll see what I'm talking about. Then tell me what you think. I'd love to hear opinions on this matter!

Only one place to buy after market stuff such as that for the BGE IMO. http://www.ceramicgrillstore.com/lumpring.htmlTom is a great guy, stands 100% behind everything he makes and will go to great lengths to make sure you get the product you are after. His stuff is not cheap, but you will never have to replace it! Mike

Are any of you folks using a charcoal reducing ring from the CGS? Just curious how well they'd work.

I think you'd be better off with a divider, just for quick direct grilling. Maybe like you said direct/ indirect cooks too. I don't see how the lump reducing ring will help on low and slows, the same amount of coal will be burning to hit desired temp.

Agree on The Ceramic Grill Store - Great Place. We outfitted a Kamado Vision Cooker with 13"x17.5" grid system & 13"x17" oval ceramic stone from The Ceramic Grill Store. Then added the PitmasterIQ BBQ automatic temperature control system and it has turned out to be an incredible outfit. The Kamado Vision Cooker is every bit the equivalent of a large BGE at same retail price/lifetime warranty, all stainless steel hardware, but we picked up it at Costco with a $450 accessory package all for $399.99 during close out last summer. Pics taken prior to adding indirect & PitmasterIQ BBQ auto systems.

I could see the charcoal ring being usefull when wanting to do a real low temp smoke for short period of time (less than 4 hours). Smoking sausage at 160 etc, making jerky.
