Jim in Oregon, I'm not from Idaho. I'm from West Virginia. I do plan a hunt in Idaho this fall as I have some good friends there. Appreciate your comments.

Why is Idaho less of an elk destination compared to Colorado, Wyoming, Montana? Or at least that seems to be the gist of this thread. Because we're more apt to keep our mouths shut. Dick

Maybe we oughta be talkin about Montana here........(grin)
I'm thinking there is a 6 week or at least a month long general season in most parts , and a resident elk tag cost maybe $16 ?? Or ya can buy an elk-deer-bear-fishin tag for less than it costs to duck hunt hereabouts..........
Sounds pretty favorable for the residents to me......

The best thing Idaho offers its residence is the opportunity to purchase a lifetime hunting license. You can then move to Montana where the shooting is better and still go back to Idaho where the shooting is darn good. The problem for me is that my lungs and legs just cannot pack me to all of the opportunities that this neat little arrangement offers. CP.

I'll throw a curve in here. I would say Michigan!!!!!!! Only residents are allowed to hunt and we have a near 100% success rate. We just don't have the mountains like out west.
Well we're Green and we're Gold, and we play better when it's cold. All us Cheese heads have our favorite superstar. We love Brett Favre.

Kutenay.. Can't you respond to a simple question without preaching about the Canadian motherland? BC is not a state. States are in the US of A. And the question is about elk, not grouse, ducks, sheep, or gophers.
Elk, the best state for resident hunting is not Montana. But at least it's better than BC.

CP,It's my understanding that one condition of establishing residency in Montana is to relinquish any licenses held in the state where you came from. At least that's what the game warden that I was referred to as being the most knowledgable about establishing residency told me while making it clear that he didn't want me to move to Montana. With his attitude he must not have been from Montana, as everyone else I've met out there in ten visits since 1998 has had a very warm and welcoming attitude. He sure discouraged me, and I would probably be a resident now if not for him. The length of the season, and the country in general would make it the choice for me, but at my age (70) I probably won't make it.

Lefty, by the letter of the law that is correct. That being said, when you apply online for your licenses the only thing they ask for is a Mt drivers license and you check whether you've lived in the state for 180 consecutive days.

You cannot hold a resident license in two states. However, the Idaho lifetime hunting license requires you to declare your residency annually. I simply declare that I am a Montana resident and they send me a Life Time Non-Resident license. If I decide to hunt in Idaho, I must pay for my tags at non-resident rates, but I am not subject to any non-resident quotas or drawing restrictions. Fundamentally, I pay a higher price for my tags, but I have all of the other hunting privileges that a resident of Idaho enjoys. CP.

Sort of agree with Jim on Oregon. Bulls don't have much of an opportunity to get some age on them, so a good bull is extremely rare. Only a couple of units are managed for escapement by branch antlered bulls. I've been banking preference points for some years and will likely do a trophy effort in one of those units next year. Average hunter success rate on bulls is about 15% in Oregon, however, those that know the woods can be quite consistent from year to year. Idaho, with its plethora of challenging terrain, has some good escapement, produces some fairly good bulls, and one can use the same tag for archery, muzzleloading, and rifle seasons in some areas. A really extended season. As to the truly finest bulls but most difficult to draw- Arizona and New Mexico.
