If I was buying it for the action for a custom I would look for an old FN actioned Mauser like the Sears JC Higgins. They just had a lot better fit and finish.
I've owned a few Zastavia's that were very accurate rifles, just not as smooth out of the box.

Try here: http://www.k-var.com/shop/M70/They are the US importer or distributor or whatever. They handled our group buy of left handers last year.

Are they really a bargain at $600?

"Bargain" might be giving them too much credit. They are a good buy at that price, IMO. After polishing the action I am definitely satisfied with mine.

Are they really a bargain at $600? I'd say so, even at around $600. K-Var ran a July 4th promotion and I picked up the 6.5x57 for $479, shipping included. That is definitely a bargain, IMO.

Gents,
Appreciate all of the comments but I am now residing in Queensland Australia and pricing is a bit different than we know in the State's. I think I will pursue the stainless Zastava 30-06 and bed it in the Bansnser stock I have here and, simply, go kill things.
Conduct is the best proof of character.

My left handed Zastava Model 70 in 375 H&H puts five TSXs in .730 at 100 after a trigger adjustment. Out of the box. Feeds perfectly. Wood was a bit rough, but a bit of steel wool and linseed oil took care of that. For $600, what's not to like?

I bought a 458 Win Mag, LH from K-var a few months ago. It was cheap and it looked the part. It shot very nicely but it was unbalanced, very light, unfinished, well what can you expect for 800 bucks? So I decided to change it a bit. I installed an Gaboon Ebony forend tip and grip cap, added 1 1/2 pound of lead divided between the butstock and forend, added a second stock bolt and covered all heads with ebony plugs, added a Pachmayr old English decelerator pad, a flush front sling swivel stud, re-cut a bit the ugly checkering, jewelled the bolt and finally refinished the stock with tru-oil. Took me quite a bit of time but it turned out half way decent considering I'm just a hobbyist. The target is a life sized Kinko's enlargement of a picture of a Buffalo! http://imageshack.us/a/img832/8885/5j78.jpg, http://imageshack.us/a/img594/9407/8x9z.jpg, http://imageshack.us/a/img28/4418/63mc.jpghttp://imageshack.us/a/img571/4673/pym3.jpghttp://imageshack.us/a/img13/2844/xayr.jpg
