My son and I just bought 4 Duke dogproof coon traps. We're looking for some places to put them.

We live near a 5 acre pond with crawdads, frogs, and panfish in it. We live on a hill above the pond.

Based on your experience, is the pond a likely spot?

Assuming you have coons in your area-yes. Coons like to hang around water for the reasons you have listed. I have had great success with these traps. If you can find a trail put them directly in the middle of it. The best thing about these traps is that you have to worry very little about non-target catches.
If you find a good trail put out multiple traps in the same general area. If it is a good enough place for one trap, it's good enough for two(or more) and you will be surprised how often you catch multiples. They don't seem wary of other trapped animals at all. Also look for likely den areas away from the water such as large trees with cavities or brush piles.

Make sure racoon season is still open in your state.

If so use sweet baits vs. fish or you will be asking us how to kill a skunk without them spraying next.

For racoon you need to put the trap right on the side of the trail they take to the pond.

Try dry cat food and mini marshmallows for bait. I caught a few with this combo last winter. Just set it and fill 'er up. I used the cheapest dry cat food I could find & it worked great. A good tip also is to place a white styrofoam cup over the trap to keep out the rain. No self respecting coon is going to pass by without having a look-see. Try it , it works!

Last week I was trout fishing and found this trap attached to a Red cedar that was pulled down to the tree trunk.

Is this a Duke dog proof coon trap?

Looks like a Duke. If no tag I'd say it's yours now. Clean it up and start making money. wink

These are the perfect traps for someone running a line after work.
No chewouts with these puppies and you ain't catching dogs with the pull up trigger! I love them and plan to buy a dozen more before season.

It's one thing to find a non-tag trap on my property, but another to find a partial skeleton next to it. To add to the story, the skull has a bullet hole.

Hope the animal did not suffer long.

That's a damn shame. There are slobs in all walks..
Thankfully they are the exception, not the rule.

That's the only trap I use now. Use to use a lot of 220's,but not now since I tried the Dukes. I put out around 10 to 12 dozen baited with cat food, marshmellows or for real drawing power sardines. I still use 110's for rats and a few 1 1/2s or #2's too. 4's and 330's for beaver and Montgomery's for coyotes. And a few snares here and there.
