What keeps it from slipping up and down the barrel?

I like it.
I would take the sling off the gun unless you are in the act of using it.

There is a chicago screw under that first loop nearest the barrel that holds her tight. (this hole you punch & install yourself. I guess that, and the angle of pull once its on the shoulder, but it hasnt slipped yet.

I bought a similar style in a nylon sling for a shotgun and Krico 223, it works fine. I like the Savage lettering, nice touch.

Had a similar nylon sling a while back and gave it away pretty quick. The nylon fabric ate barrel bluing like it was cornflakes. The guy I gave it to is happy because the nylon is cleaning up the rust on his barrel.

my biggest concern is the metal rivets working on the wood. I believe john moses makes the same stile without any metal at all

This is whats on the back of the screws where it may touch the buttstock. Looks like moleskin, but too thick to be that. Actually feels like leather.

Something to be aware of with leather slings that incorporate a wide loop around the barrel. Any sand/bloody dirt/dried mud etc. in the loop can and will grind away at the blueing if the rifle is carried by the sling for any length of time. Some tape around the barrel will save you some grief if that happens. edit to add: Now that I have read through the thread, I see others have already mentioned the potential blueing wear problem with this style sling. So not to be totally redundant, I'll add a pic of another version of a swivel-free sling. Home made. The loops are standard harness maker's triple loops. The one securing the butt has a slit for the heel to protrude through. About as simple a sling can be.
