I am looking at getting my first spotting scope. I picked up a pair of Zen-Ray Prime Binos last year prior to going to Wyoming on my Mule deer hunt and like them a bunch. This year I would like to get a spotting scope to carry with me also. I am looking in the price range of a used Leupold GR non HD. This will be used once a year on trips out west and throughout the year on my farm in TN just looking around. Any thoughs on why I should or shouldn't go with one of these? Thanks in advance!

its a great scope with good eye relief. not the brightest scope in the business but a decent spotter. another value spotter is the vortex viper hd, if you look they can be found for 550 ish. but its a heavier bulkier spotting scope, which may or may not be an issue.

You are looking at the right one. I do plan on either the HD model or the non HD myself. Tough spotter and no nonsense.
JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

I had a GR in question with HD and one without. I much preferred the HD model when above 30X. They are nice scopes with great eye relief. I have a Swaro HD now and really like it but the Leupold is a nice unit.

one other commment I had the HD model and preferred to use the scope around 28-30x that is just how the scope seemed to like to be used. the image suffered much past that power. the vortex viper seems to work better than the GR at higher powers. oh one other thing if you wanna look at one bad A$$ spotter check out the new gold ring with the 80mm lense on it. wowsa that scope is nice. but its a beast. that scope and the meopta S2 are my favorite big boy spotters.

Same here, had both and liked them very much, came across a Swaro HD that I couldn't pass up or I'd still be using the Leupold. There is a difference with the HD but the non HD will still serve you very well. Great spotter.
