No need for a flame suit.

Is there such a thing as under kill?

I imagine a direct hit to the rumen, reticulum, or abomasum would be a good example both of "underkill" and not "big enough" as relates to the 338 in any case volume - and a whole bunch of larger bores as well. Would the critter die? Without question, I'm sure. But timeliness and recovery might be a question. I think we could fairly call that underkill. But I have yet to kill a moose that could have shrugged off a 180 grain 30 caliber bullet of decent construction.

bcd,

When you talk to yourself, do you understand what you're saying?

I've killed 1 bull moose with a 375H&H, every other animal I have harvested I used my M70 270 and 150gr Nosler Partitions. That's everything from whitetails to grizzly bear.

270 is enough gun in the hands of the right shooter

last two seasons went armed with a 7mm-08, didn't feel defenseless at all

both moose DRT

I have only hunted for 4 years up here in Alaska. In my personal experience a 338 win mag is alot of gun but works great if you can handle it. It is by no means required for game here. Hell natives kill plenty of game with any rifle and ammo they can easily get. Anyway I like the 338 because I can tolerate the recoil, it will hammer game with good bullet placement, it has a good bit of range as well. I have used .270, .308, .30-06, 350 rem mag, 338 win mag, 375 ruger, 45-70. I used these back down south for deer, hogs, etc. in Alaska alot of shots can be up close or 3-500 yds away. I personally am only comfortable to about 3 maybe 400 with ideal conditions. I know te 338 will be pretty much a point blank aim for most shots in that range with some needing a little hold over. I use the 338 caribou hunting and it works great and doesn't blow up meat like my .270 does. It is also comforting to have a medium bore when big browns come around while hunting other game. If I were to have only one rifle for Alaska the 338 win mag is it. Ammo is abundant thru the state as well. Since I am a free man and can own all the guns I want I have a caliber for about every animal just because its a good reason for me to buy more guns. Not sure how many of you posting have been up close to a brownie but I felt like my 338 wasn't big enough when she came in close to see a small moose we were cleaning. I went and bought a 375 ruger the next day and plan to use that pig for a brownie.

How do you like the big Ruger? Do much shooting with it yet? If you get a chance, post up a little range report. Especially if you get to use her on a Brownie.

I really like the ruger. I was leary for a while because I couldn't find brass or loaded ammo but now its pretty common at most box stores here and I can get brass pretty easily. Its a thumper but not much more than a 338 is. I don't like the hogue stock as its too fat and tacky but it does soak up recoil very well and its easy to grip in the wet and cold up here. Maybe it will grow on me. I usually run 250gr Sierra soft points and for a brownie I am gonna run the 250gr barnes TTSX. Both shoot into 1.5 inches at 100yds. I have about 20 of each load thru it with no issues so I do really love the gun just haven't warmed up to the stock. If I get a brownie in the spring I will post up pics of it.

If you were to "hoist your own petard" in the forest, would it make a sound?
