I have a Savage 99EG that after inspecting fired Winchester factory loads The primers are backed out a bit. The cases are not split or cracked at all and other than the primers they seem fine. I sent it to a reputable gunsmith (he has restored 99's that were featured in Rifle Magazine) and he said that the bolt will close on the no go gauge and the rifle has about 0.005" headspace. He said a lot of 99's have a slight headspace issue and that I shouldn't be to concerned. The gun locks up tight, lever stays up close to the stock and it also stays put after the gun is fired. I reload and I can therefore can adjust my dies to control headspace after the first firing of new brass. Just wondering what some of the more experienced 99 owners think?

What caliber? I have had problems with 308 lever actions more so than any other caliber combined.

I suspect he's talking about a .300. Yup, set the dies to kiss the shoulder and you will be fine.
The worst I've seen in the lever guns has been the .308 too. Handloading lets you live with it.

Yes, it's a 300 Savage. Is 0.005" a lot?

Your 'smith should be using the field gage. The go-no-go gage is for new rifles as they set the head space. The field gage is more appropriate for used rifles.
Seat your primers well, don't load hot and do as Lightfoot said.

I'm not sure if he has a field guage in 300 Savage. They don't seem very popular. Brownells only offers them in .308 and 30-06. I'll load light and size my cases accordingly.

Loading light can cause primers to back out.

I guess loading light was a poor choice of words. I won't load hot. How about 40gr IMR 4895/IMR4064 max.

Following Lightfoot's advice to set your dies up so that they don't move the shoulder back will fix your problem. Your brass will fireform to your chamber and with your dies adjusted to compensate you'll be fine. I've had to do the same thing with a Mauser. Works just fine. Something you might want to pass on if you ever decide to sell the rifle.
