Myself and 3 others have been applying for elk tags in Wyoming. We have been applying for unit 7. two of us have 3 points, and 2 others have 4 points next year. Honestly, we are all sick of applying and not hunting. Anyone have a suggestion for a unit in Wyoming that we can draw and have a decent chance of filling our tags? 4 years is too long to wait.

There are a ton of good general areas you have 50/50 odds with no points and 100% with a point.

Are you wasting money for a reason or just hell bound to hunt a jigsaw puzzled unit?

want to hunt elk yearly shooting cows while still building points for a good bull area? Thats possible as well.

You just need a Wyoming education seminar.

The Meteetse country south of Cody has good bulls and is a marginally easier draw. Last fall in the northern Bighorns hunting moose in unit one, I saw several elk that would go in the 320+ class. Might be a sleeper.....

I've tried to deceifer the regs to hunt Wyoming on their website, but wind up dazed and confused - not that unusual for me. I'm very interested in hunting Wyoming, and would like to find an area with good mule deer and elk hunting.

Is it possible to get both a deer and elk tag during the same timeframe in WY? Is there a combo tag or do they need to be rounded up seperately? Not looking for a trophy area, just one with a good shot at a decent animal, cows are fine for me.

Also, it's got to be in a DIY, public land setting - I'm a cheap bastard.

Thanks.

Most deer hunts are before elk hunts.

Some perspective.....

This is a 21 bull. He has killed two of these his last two times out...

His buddy killed this one....[Linked Image]

General Wyoming unit that can be drawn 50/50 with no points or 100% 1 point.

These are area 11 and 100 bulls....[Linked Image]

Mainly we were putting in for 7 because we had a ranch to hunt on. We Deer and Antelope hunted it for a minimal tresspass fee. We always seen Elk, lots of elk, and some real whoppers. So we started applying, every year the number of point required to draw goes up. We will never catch up. Its like a dog chasing his tail. The Real kick in the tail is the old couple who owned the ranch past on, and the son sold out to a huge land company. So now no more hunting for a reasonable price.

Need another option. I will look into unit 11. any other suggestions are appreciated.

With threats of Wy tag price increases late in 2012, there was a ton of point dumping for the 2013 season. The stats show some folks burning 5 or 6 points for GEN unit. A couple of my buddies with points failed on 2013 GEN tags. That's been unheard of before. With this years point dumping, odds will likely be better for 2014.

If one really wants to hunt elk, go for a GEN tag. There is plenty of good elk hunting to be had in those units.

What is the difference between a GEN unit/tag and other types?

Sorry to hear that news on the ranch hunting. Seems to be the story more and more out west. Sad from all perspectives.

This thread has been very helpful to me. A buddy & I have been investigating different options out there for several years and while I understand their PP system the elk tag classifications are a mystery to me.

Any further enlightenment on Gen vs other tags would be very helpful to me, though I do intend to go to their site and investigate for myself.

Thanks again all!

Good thread fellas, thanks to the guys down in wyo for their insight. I have 5 points and have been debating on where to apply for 2014. Might put my old man in with me beings he's never elk hunted. I know how the points system works but wth. Lived in Cheyenne and spent some time roaming the southern end of Wyo, can't wait to get back down there!

You ought to be a resident in Alberta! Taking nearly 10yrs to be drawn now. I'm currently at 5.

Funny thing is, if you are a nonresident and hire a guy like this, http://www.silversageoutfitters.com you can hunt every year you afford it.

Not fair! frown

Unit 11 looks very small. its more than 1/2 National Forest which is good. how much pressure does this unit get? Is there room to get away from the crowd?

I hunted there last year. It is very crowded, but you can get away from everyone if you are willing to walk a few miles. I had a cow tag and saw several bulls, but only one cow and that is when I was driving in.

I posted that last pic to show you guys what other areas in Wyoming offer. The bull on the right is from a very hard to draw area 100 unit. The bull on the left is from a fairly easy to draw area 11.

My point is you can kill very nice bulls in easier to draw units. Eastmans and Garth dont always have the best info. Do your own research.

Cows are a two hour trip max in 11. And yes 11 is a small area with lots of pressure from road hunters. Lace up the boots and step away from the roads. You will be rewarded.
