Looking for advice on a 1st time backcountry hunt. I'd like to try Montana, but do not have a clue where to start. Not looking for trophy class animals, just enough to get my feet wet and give my old man a chance to get out there before he's too old. Appreciate any help offered.

This is a good place to start - when you narrow it down, move on to the state's game regs and then correlate that with maps and areas you're interested in scouting. You also might try working backwards, look for ideas of places to go and animals and then check regs for seasons/draws/$$/etc.

From what you described, pretty much any western state will have opportunities depending on the animal.

I can't help you with specifics (haven't been out of state yet for hunting), but hanging out on these forums will give you some ideas over time...

Also, wherever you pick make sure you match up the trip to your experience level and condition. The miles can click by very slowly with a 20+% grade and a 40-50 lb pack.

A guy hates to ask for a specific spot to hunt and half the fun is figuring it out as you go anyhow. I spent some time on the Montana website in the plan your hunt section, but it doesn't seem too user friendly or at least friendly to me.

I pretty much have the gear to do it from the backpacking I've done around home, but I haven't had the chance to get out west yet.
