I don't remember discussing this one, though I might just be forgetting it. Very interesting. If the request was for a solid frame 99K (maybe because somebody thought takedowns weren't as accurate?), odd that it still has a takedown barrel. The R on the barrel seems out of place, seen quite a few with the last 3 of the serial but don't remember seeing letters on many. Anybody?
Does the top of the barrel have the K engraving near the receiver?

Jim that is a really neat rifle.....a solid frame K. New one by me. I've seen early EG's with take down barrels. Besides in the 30's you didn't waste anything......... I could see them adding a little hydrogen peroxide to the threads, screwing the barrel in for the final time and done.

This is a very nice rifle and an interesting puzzle as well. I've read the JTC letter several times. Is JTC saying that this Model K is, "special and unique" among Savage rifles in general or this one is, "special and unique" among Model K's? The way he words it, I would think the latter, but he does not provide any specifics to explain that statement. For example, he does not state the rifle was shipped as a solid-frame rifle. If anything, he implies it is a takedown as he describes it as having the same features as the 99-G takedown. The only indication it is different from an other K is that it was returned at a later date for work. I would write JTC and ask if he could clarify. Does the record make any statements that suggest it is anything other than a standard Model K is what I would be most interested in clearing up. Thanks for posting

I have a letter as well on my "K". I have seen several letters on other "K"s and the words "special and unique" appear on all of them. Any opinion on this particular rifle would be speculation at best. No one else has come forward and laid claim to owning another in this configuration. That being said, it is a puzzle that may never be completed. I wish I had not been on vacation when it came up for sale.

What about the position of the forearm screw/barrel dovetail? Maybe it was originally a takedown, and they just mounted a new forearm and did away with the takedown hardware.

Jim that is a really neat rifle.....a solid frame K. I could see them adding a little hydrogen peroxide to the threads, screwing the barrel in for the final time and done. Seeing as though hydrogen peroxide was already around for a hundred + years by the time that rifle was born, that's an interesting thought. Seeing as though a gun person of one persuasion or another and not a surgeon would have done the work, I would think he peened the threads a tad before winding the barrel. It's done and we'll never know,,,,,,,,,,,,,for sure. Does it REALLY matter on such a great rifle just as it sits??? Poor little thing is getting passed around like a babe in Barcelona!!!!!!!!!

I can't tell from the pictures........does it have a takedown button or is the fore end retained with a single screw?

Full sized version of pic #2 shows a screw, I believe.

As with many guns we have seen before this one has a work order # that tells us something was done to the gun the question is what special work was done first you have to understand that there was two sets of records one was used in shipping room the other was used in work orders on guns returned for work of some kind some work order # were recorded on the original shipping room records some were not the problem is all work orders got wet in the cellar of the Savage factory and were trashed many years ago.As you recall the same question was asked about R&D guns and most got recorded but some were changed at a later time and the records were destroyed when the cellar flooded at the factory!!! I do not know if this helps but it is what happend!!!

Of course it helps. If you take the time to seek out something special, then you should have the where with all to find out all you can about what you have. We are lucky to have the information we have as far as the books in JTC's possession. Thanks for taking the time to add what you did.

Rory is correct. Single screw.

Thanks, Fug. Had heard the work order records were lost, but don't remember hearing the specifics.
